The majority of architects are concerned about the climate crisis, but yet they find themselves struggling to become part of the solution. A recent Australian survey found that many architects are overwhelmed when it comes to sustainability practices. UK architects, do you have a similar experience? If so, we can assist you. The National Institute of Building Sciences is offering a webinar October 24 1300-1400 ET (1-2pm): Existing Buildings: Retrofitting for Resillience Data from Architecture 2030 shows that in 2040, approximately 2/3 of the global building stock will be buildings that exist today. Without widespread existing building decarbonization across the globe, these buildings will still be emitting CO2 in 2040, and we will fall short of the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C reduction target. Retrofitting to meet energy efficiency and net-zero emissions is crucial, but what about retrofitting to withstand increasing climate risks? As climate and hazard risks intensify, resilient buildings need to become the status quo. Resilient retrofits also open the door to indigenous populations, people of color, and low-income communities achieving social equity, as they are typically the communities most exposed to hazards. Join us, as our expert panel discusses how finance, design, and policy all converge to create a more resilient existing building stock. Register here: https://lnkd.in/eee9p_5z

In a world increasingly shaped by climate change, resilience is not just a desirable trait; it's a necessity. As extreme weather events become more frequent and severe, our buildings must adapt to withstand these challenges. By embracing sustainable building practices and incorporating resilient design principles, we can create structures that are not only strong and durable but also environmentally friendly and adaptable to future conditions. #circulareconomy #climatechange #sustainability #embodiedcarbon #projectmanagement #construction #TERG

This is a powerful and important message: renovation is more difficult and complex than knocking down and rebuilding...but has massive benefits. I recognise this in my own neighbourhood when people chose to sensitively renovate instead of demolishing and building another mega-mansion I recognise it walking around cities that have prioritised restoration and repurposing of heritage buildings, celebrating the architecture of the past And I see potential also in the water sector... we can and should be more creative in our use and upgrade of existing assets. Clever technologies and smart engineering can obtain great results without having to start again from scratch every 20 or 30 years.

Sustainability Despair Architects stand at the forefront of shaping not just our buildings, but also our future. Their role goes beyond the realms of design & aesthetics; architects are pivotal in communicating a vision of the future that is both sustainable & resilient. This unique responsibility places them at the heart of our efforts to combat climate change. Every model, every structure they conceive, is an opportunity to integrate sustainable practices, promote energy efficiency and embrace eco-friendly materials. Architects don't just design spaces; they design solutions for a world grappling with environmental challenges. The value of architects in our quest for a sustainable future cannot be overstated. Their work is a constant reminder that every construction project is a chance to make a positive impact on the environment. By prioritizing green spaces, optimizing natural light and employing renewable energy sources, architects demonstrate that progress & sustainability can go hand in hand. They are not just building for today but are laying the foundations for a greener, more hopeful tomorrow. In a world facing unprecedented climate challenges, architects offer a beacon of hope, showing us that through innovation and thoughtful design, we can create a future that is not only habitable but thriving. https://loom.ly/21tOgZw #sustainability #architecture #design

Arup, a London-based collective of engineering and sustainability consultants, designers, architects and experts, has released a heat map this month of the capital, using its heat-mapping tool, UHeat. The map, commissioned by the mayor of London, comes after 2023 was the hottest year ever recorded, and many expressed concerns about how London's built environment would cope with more of the same or potentially even higher temperatures. As environmental concerns around global warming grow worldwide, there is a growing feeling of responsibility for the construction industry to bring sustainability to the forefront of plans. As a leader, how would you manage making this as a priority? #sustainability #globalwarming #contruction #builtenvironment

One of our incredibly brave entrepreneurs recently received a report about the carbon sequestering of their proprietary straw-insulated panels. This product keeps on delivering. Insulative, acoustic baffling, equivalent cost metrics, fast construction possibilities, and undeniably better for planet health - now, not in 30 years. #strategyinaction #brandstrategy #sustainablebuilding
One of the key points made by our recent VIA Architects // report into the carbon sequestering properties of our panels is that not only do they store 4x as much carbon than is emitted during their production, this carbon is pulled out of the atmosphere from the previous 12 months, and not from 30 years ago (like a timber frame). Against a backdrop of accelerating climate change, this is such great news. We’re committed to NZ’s goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050- and as COLLINS puts it: “ We need companies and organizations to make these better answers real. Now. At scale. Fast.” #HibernaModular #StrawSIPSPanels #SustainableConstruction #PassiveHouseMovement #ArchitecturalDesign #EcoFriendlyDesign #SustainableNZ #climatechange
