A highly conservative estimate states that the current loss of plant species is between 100 and 1000 times higher than the expected natural extinction rate and that the Earth is losing at least one potential major drug every 2 years. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the World Wildlife Fund, there are between 50,000 and 80,000 flowering plant species used for medicinal purposes worldwide. Our call for proposals for the conservation of Colombian threatened tree species is now open. It will close on April 7th. It follows the development of a Conservation Action Plan for Colombian trees and aims at initiating its implementation. WIth more than 6000 species, Colombia is the world's second richest country after Brazil in terms of tree species diversity with a large number of endemics.

This week’s vignette for #CanadasMissingWildlifeProject is an easy one. The extinction of the Great Auk shows the critical importance of protecting breeding aggregations of birds and other wildlife. Great Auk is one of our first well documented extinctions and is a fascinating case study of extinction denialism, Victorian-era Darwinism that justifies human-caused extinction as survival of the fittest, and the genesis of our Western conservation awakening and acknowledgement that humans can cause wildlife to disappear.
