This week’s vignette for #CanadasMissingWildlifeProject is an easy one. The extinction of the Great Auk shows the critical importance of protecting breeding aggregations of birds and other wildlife. Great Auk is one of our first well documented extinctions and is a fascinating case study of extinction denialism, Victorian-era Darwinism that justifies human-caused extinction as survival of the fittest, and the genesis of our Western conservation awakening and acknowledgement that humans can cause wildlife to disappear.

⚫New update to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species; AKA the major information source on the global conservation status of life. 🔴Species on there now reflect data recorded and shared by more than 1300 zoos, aquariums and conservation institutions worldwide via an integration with ZIMS by Species360. 🟠This means IUCN now provides a complete image of species population numbers in the wild and in human care. 🟡This One Plan Approach shows the importance of aligning conservation efforts across in situ and ex situ domains to safeguard threatened species. Read more: https://ow.ly/bgl050Tvro1 🟢Or see for yourself by searching for a species on the IUCN Red List, and scrolling to 'Ex situ data from Species360' in the External Data section. 📷 Extinct-in-the-Wild Socorro dove chick | London Zoo

🎉Species population data from Species360's Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) has been added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. 🤝Over 1,300 zoos, aquariums and other wildlife and conservation organisations contribute data to the ZIMS global database. These data can now be more easily integrated into conservation plans and actions for threatened species, substantially advancing the One Plan Approach to conservation. --- Find out more: https://lnkd.in/ecjMWe3R --- #exsitu #insitu #wildlifeconservation #OnePlan #iucnredlist

I help landowners and managers enhance land for wildlife with research-backed recommendations | Recovering bobwhite quail. Free habitat guide at link below.
Habitat connectivity is key for certain wildlife species to persist. A practical approach is to set an acreage cutoff for targeting education and conservation efforts. In Southern Maryland, that threshold looks to be about 50 acres (everything in yellow).

The State of the World’s Migratory Species report, unveiled by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) at the start of the UN wildlife conservation conference (#CMSCOP14) in #Samarkand, is the first inventory to assess the status of migratory species and how they are trying to survive in a world dramatically changed by humans. It found the two biggest threats were overexploitation and loss of habitat because of human activity, such as clearing land for farming, roads and infrastructure. Those activities also fragment migratory species’ pathways, often making it impossible for them to complete their journeys. While some migratory species are improving, nearly half are experiencing population declines, with over one-fifth threatened with extinction. Alarmingly, almost all CMS-listed fish face #extinction. This comprehensive assessment underscores the urgent need for global cooperation to address the threats facing migratory species, from overexploitation to habitat loss. Let’s translate this science into action and ensure the survival of #MigratorySpecies #Conservation #CMSReport2024 🦅🐟 https://lnkd.in/e9EH6iz6

The 2016 Mammal Red List for South Africa, Eswatini, and Lesotho details over 340 species and highlights that close to 60 species are threatened with extinction. The EWT and SANBI are currently underway revising this list which will be released in 2025. This list is an essential tool for understanding and addressing the threats facing our wildlife.
