120 million people watched the Super Bowl last night. That’s a lot of potential coffee drinkers. Did you crave a cold brew or iced coffee this am? Last night’s Super Bowl wasn’t just a showcase of top-tier sportsmanship; it was a caffeine-fueled evening that has us all buzzing - literally! Two giants of the coffee world, Stok Cold Brew and Dunkin™️ took to the grand stage with spectacular commercials. Stok brewed up a storm with their audacious support for the Wrexham Football Club, featuring the fiery red dragon mascot and none other than the legendary Anthony Hopkins. Talk about blending the worlds of sports, drama, and coffee with impeccable style! Thanks to Rob and Ryan for owning the team the past 4 years ( checkout their story on Hulu) ( oh yeah - it’s also the year of the dragon - happy new year) Then, Dunkin™️ turned up the charm with the return of Ben Affleck with Matt Damon, Jennifer Lopez, and Tom Brady, giving us a taste of Hollywood glamour with their favorite cup of Joe. It’s not every day you see such icons banding together for the love of coffee! (You can buy DunKings™️ swag at ShopDunkin - watch for restocking of these already sold out track suits) These commercials are a testament to the creative genius in advertising and the universal love for coffee. It’s thrilling to see coffee taking center stage on one of the biggest nights in sports, highlighting the growing desire for cold crew and iced coffee. As a devout coffee lover, I see this as a brilliant example of how passion can meet professionalism and create something truly memorable. This is a sad, sad, very sad day in naming history!! I've just learned that one of my absolute favorite naughty names of all time is going to go away. Kum & Go shops are going to be renamed after their new owners Maverik, Inc. I'm not a 13-year-old boy, so why do I care that this snigger-worthy name is going away? Because it's a brilliant branding asset, that's why! It's incredibly attention-grabbing and memorable, and that always matters a lot, but I think the importance of a powerful, differentiating name is dramatically multiplied in a category like convenience stores, which is really heating up. In particular, the behemoth competitor Buc-ee's, Ltd. is expanding dramatically and seizing the public imagination. Maverik is an okay name, but it's not ridiculous and sticky like Kum & Go, and I think that real, meaningful brand equity is being squandered. What a shame! Well, Halloween was fun. Now, onto the (bigger) holiday season. Amirite? The first spot out of the gate licenses a well-known song and features an unexpected celebrity. For many brands, marketing should prioritize THIS time of year. You want to invest in a massive campaign with tons of media and production dollars? DO IT TO KICK OFF THIS SEASON. NOT TO END FOOTBALL'S. Sure, Super Bowl spots usually get more attention, more press, and more conversation. Because of that, it's far more difficult to cut through over the holidays than it is on the big Sunday. The Super Bowl may have a more concentrated audience, but let's face it... there's WAAAAAAAAY more at stake over the holiday season. You make your year over the holidays. You build your brand over the holidays. You move more product over the holidays. You may grow your ego with the right Super Bowl spot. It's been a while since I've paid attention to Super Bowl ads. The last time I paid attention to them was when I was still in corporate advertising in Shanghai. For several years in a row, at 8am on a February Monday (time difference shenanigans), all us industry folk gather at some sports bar special for breakfast and beers and critique what trends we were seeing at America's most expensive 30-second-spot showcase. It was fun and educational and whenever a brand dropped something really groundbreaking, I loved being able to ooh and ahh over it with other professionals. There are now a lot less ad wo/men in my life at this moment, but that path might be re-opening to me in 2024, so I figured I'd get the momentum going by watching all 59 pieces that graced #SBLVIII. And... yikes. I get that if there's anytime to blow your budget on a celebrity, it's probably going to be when you're already spending $7 million for a placement but... aren't the celebrity placements supposed to have some internal logic? Why is Ken Jeong being unfrozen from a cryogenic state for fried chicken? Was that in a movie I never saw? Why is Glenn Close the nemesis of Tina Fey? Was that in a 30 Rock episode I missed? Chris Pratt literally needs that fake mustache to look even remotely like the Pringles man so why would anyone mistake him for the Pringles man? Beyonce trying to "break the internet" for Verizon. Christopher Walken barely tolerating Walken impressions for BMW. Jennifer Aniston and the Beckhams playing dementia patients for Uber Eats. Aubrey Plaza deadpanning "having a blast" for Mountain Dew. Arnie & Danny DeVito reuniting for State Farm but without a Twins callback anywhere. What was the actual point of any of these cameos? There was only one clear winner for an ad idea that I saw this time - something that was clever, quirky and still looked like it made even the most remote amount of sense: Michael Cera repping CeraVe. It somehow managed to satirize the celebrity product pander at the VERY MOMENT that literally everyone else was turning in lazy celebrity product pandering.
