#DYK? 1997 was declared by ICRI as the first International Year of the Reef (IYOR), in response to the increasing threats on #coralreefs and associated ecosystems around the world. #ICRI30 🪸IYOR is a global effort to increase awareness and understanding on the values and threats to coral reefs, and to support related conservation, research and management efforts.   🐠The first IYOR, followed by the 1998 International Year of the Ocean, broadened #awareness and commitment around the #world and created a new sense of urgency for conservation and sustainable use of coral reef ecosystems. The Pacific Year of the Reef and the launch of the ReefCheck voluntary monitoring network are just two of the many innovative activities of IYOR. Did you know that 20 of the almost 1200 properties on the World Heritage List are found in Australia? This includes the iconic #GreatBarrierReef. All properties inscribed on the #WorldHeritage List must meet the requirements for Outstanding Universal Value (OUV). The Reef’s OUV includes its unique natural attributes and enormous scientific and environmental importance. Australia works constructively and closely with UNESCO and IUCN to protect the OUV of the Reef and all our World Heritage properties. The work we do to protect the Reef also ensures that its OUV remains intact. 🌊 The Unomia Learning Exchange: A learning session and briefing alert on the potentially #invasive soft coral, Unomia stolonifera, in the #Caribbean. Introduced into a Venezuelan coastal coral community in the early 2000’s, its range has since expanded to include other coral habitats, as well as seagrass meadows and mangrove roots. This species was recently found in Cuba. With its #rapid growth and lack of natural predators, U. stolonifera has the potential to exclude native species and reduce biodiversity in the Caribbean. 💻 During the webinar, experts from #Venezuela and #Cuba will share available information on the appearance and expansion of this non-native species, including ongoing studies of its reproduction and invasive properties. 🌊🚢 Celebrating a Century of Portuguese-Norwegian Maritime Research Cooperation! 🚢🌊   This year marks the 100th anniversary of the fruitful partnership between Portugal and Norway in oceanographic research! 🌐🔬   Since 1924, our nations have worked hand-in-hand to advance our understanding of the seas. It all began with the acquisition of the oceanographic ship "Albacora," equipped and supported by Norway. Over the years, this collaboration has only grown stronger, bringing forth milestones like the research vessel "Noruega" in 1978 and the research vessel "Mário Ruivo" in 2015.   The IPMA fleet, a cornerstone of this partnership, has become a crucial asset for the entire national and international scientific community. With this in mind, we are developing the Ressources FRAnçaises CORalliennes - REFRACOR 2030 project, the fruit of more than three years' work.
