About us
The Caribbean Sea is singular due to its enclosed position, its particular biodiveristy, its numerous islands and therefore its different people and culture. This Sea provides innumerable benefits to human populations, mainly as food supply and touristic revenues. To ensure their future, it is necessary for Caribbean territories to act as a body to preserve this environment. Therefore, the Cartagena Convention, which is the only legally restrictive regional agreement on the environment, was adopted in 1983 and is ratified by 26 Caribbean countries. Its secretariat is ensured by the Regional Coordination Unit for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEnvironment-RCU) and is established at Kingston (Jamaica). It is supported by three protocols that respectively deal with 1. Oil Spills, 2. Biodiversity (SPAW) and 3. Pollution from Land-Based Sources and Activities (LBS). The protocol concerning Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife in the Wider Caribbean Region (SPAW) was adopted on 18 January 1990 and entered into fore a decade later, on 18 June 2000. It is ratified by 17 countries (which represents more that 30 territories). SPAW protocol gathers 32 protected areas, mainly marine. The protocol is also accompanied with three appendices which list 1. Strictly protected species of flora, 2. Strictly protected species of fauna and 3. Species of flora or fauna with regulation of exploitation issues. SPAW-RAC is based at DEAL of Guadeloupe, Basse-Terre (France). Principal SPAW-RAC mission is to implement the SPAW protocol across the Wider Caribbean Region. To achieve that, it gathers protected areas, helps to create new ones and helps to their management through training workshops for instance. It also review the species listed under the appendices. Furthermore SPAW-RAC can create, conduct or assist various environmental projects. It also participates to different scaled meetings to broadcast information and knowledge about the Caribbean environmental issues.

🪸 GCRMN-Caribbean Data Workshop at the UNAM – Puerto Morelos, Mexico In early October, we had the honor of organizing the GCRMN-Caribbean data workshop for the regional and global report at the Unidad Académica de Sistemas Arrecifales of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Puerto Morelos, México. Supported by the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) and UN Environment Programme, we brought together 15 experts in coral reefs data analysis from the four corners of the Caribbean (Mexico, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Sint Maarten, Jamaica, USVI, Colombia, Cuba, UKOT, Bahamas, USA, France, etc.). Thanks to International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) for its participation and coordination with the forthcoming global report. At the same time, we met the participants from the UNDP REEF+ workshop and we learned more about the MERMAID assessment tool. After 4 days of intense discussions, we agreed on the structure of the next Caribbean report and on the data analysis method. We look forward to sharing the results on the state of coral reefs. In the meantime, the call for data has been extended to November 30. Thanks to Anastazia Banaszak and her team for the presentation and fascinating visit of her coral reproduction laboratory of the Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limmnología. Thanks to Sara Gutierrez Plata and her team for visiting her MarFUND project on king crab reproduction. of the Instituto Mexicano de Investigación en Pesca y Acuacultura Sustentables. Thanks to Mélina Soto of Healthy Reefs for Healthy People for the on-site ogranization and her immense support. Many thanks to the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) for hosting this Data Workshop in its beautiful university. We're delighted to have such a fine team of experts on board for the preparation of the next 2 GCRMN reports (Caribbean & Global). #ForCoral Healthy Reefs for Healthy People, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, AGRRA, Universidad de Costa Rica UCR, The Nature Conservancy, Fondo para la Accion Ambiental y la Niñez, University of the Virgin Islands, The University of the West Indies, JNCC, CNAP, NOVA BLUE ENVIRONMENT, Initiative Française pour les récifs coralliens (Ifrecor), SPAW-RAC
