At Edge Innovation we've been really busy developing opportunities for Tees Valley businesses. We're working with big organisations (both public and private) to understand a challenge they have. We then publish this for local businesses to respond to, providing grant funding and expert support to help with the development of a suitable solution. We’ve published the first challenges and there are more on the way. The initial ones are: · Development of tools for capturing user journey data within transport, working with the Community Transport Association; the CTA works with over 2,000 operators across the UK, so this is a big potential market for a data specialist to break into. · Development of improved ways to reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from chemical plants, working with Lianhetech Europe; Lianhetech is a major local manufacturer and employer and is focused on making a significant contribution to emissions reductions, with suitable solutions having the potential for reapplication across the entire industry; this challenge could be appropriate to engineering, process control and data analysis type organisations. · Working with Middlesbrough FC to develop improved ways to engage young fans within their existing, highly successful family zone; this is a very broad challenge, with potential solutions coming from design agencies, digital architecture firms, visual artists, events companies, interior designers, creative freelancers and more. · A challenge with Middlesbrough College around detecting and managing the use of artificial intelligence in student work, leading to simplified processes and freeing up staff time; this challenge could be relevant for tech companies with a background in AI but also to businesses with an understanding of HR processes and change management in large organisations. Challenges soon to be launched include work with: · Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV), focused on innovative approaches to managing waiting lists; · South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, focused on a product design project for staff training; · A social value challenge with Tees Valley Combined Authority, related to innovation in procurement; · Work with Darlington Borough Council and Middlesbrough Council, along with multiple large businesses. We are able to provide grants to unlock solutions to these challenges alongside expert support. We’d like people across Tees Valley to get involved. More information is at https://lnkd.in/gr-SHM-B. Support is fully funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Tees Valley Innovation Challenge is delivered by Edge Innovation and Health Innovation North East and North Cumbria on behalf of the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority, and the Tees Valley Business Board.

Mastering Separation: The Art and Science of Distillation and Filtration in the Chemical Industry A wide range of separation methods are required in the chemical industry to isolate different elements from mixtures. Techniques such as distillation, filtration, extraction, chromatography, and crystallisation play key roles in this process. Distillation is a widely used method that leverages differences in boiling points to separate components in a mixture. By heating the mixture, the component with a lower boiling point vaporises first and then condenses back into liquid form. This precise process allows for separation based on boiling points, enabling accurate extraction. Filtration, on the other hand, is used to separate solid particles from a liquid or gas medium by passing the mixture through a filter. The filter retains the solid particles while allowing the liquid or gas to pass through, resulting in a clear separation of components. Advanced filtration techniques, such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration membranes, are helping industries overcome critical issues, improve productivity, and promote green manufacturing. The importance of distillation lies in its effectiveness in separating components with distinct boiling points, whereas filtration excels in removing solid particles from liquid or gas mixtures. These techniques are essential in the chemical industry for purifying and isolating specific components from complex mixtures. Overall, distillation and filtration are indispensable tools in the chemical sector for meticulously isolating and purifying components from intricate mixtures. By utilising these methods effectively, researchers and industry professionals can achieve precise separations and produce high-quality products. Moreover, these techniques contribute significantly to sustainable practices by enhancing efficiency, reducing waste, and supporting green manufacturing initiatives. They also play a crucial role in ensuring product safety and compliance with regulatory standards, which is vital for maintaining consumer trust and market integrity. According to a 2019 report, the chemical industry contributes an estimated $5.7 trillion to the world’s GDP and supports 120 million jobs worldwide, highlighting its vast impact and the importance of sustainable practices.
