🌍 **Why is a strong Theory of Change (TOC) essential?** At Population Media Center, our Theory of Change model is the backbone of our success. It’s effective because our programs meet people where they are, leverage scientifically-backed social change theories, and reach millions with entertaining and inspiring stories that trigger measurable behavior change. As Natalia Cereser, our VP of International Programs, emphasizes: _"Theory of Change is the great answer to the question, 'Why does it work?' This is why we develop a TOC for each design. Remember, there is nothing more dangerous than having great results and not understanding the why, because you might stop having those results and will not know how to move forward."_ This is why every PMC initiative is guided by a robust TOC, ensuring we not only achieve impactful outcomes but also understand the pathways that lead to them. Understanding the 'why' allows us to sustain and scale our efforts, bringing lasting change to communities worldwide. Discover the transformative insights gleaned from Frontieri's policy brief, analyzing Ethiopia's National Learning Outcome (NLA) data from February 2022. Insights from the Policy Brief 1. Our analysis reveals staggering disparities in student achievement levels across grades and subjects. Did you know that over 50% of students scored below 50 points (out of 100) in key subjects like Mathematics and English? Dive into the data to uncover the reasons behind these disparities. 2. Explore the eye-opening variations in educational outcomes among different demographic groups and regions. Shockingly, regions like Gambella, Benishangul Gumuz, and Afar are reported to have the lowest performance levels. Discover how factors like gender, geographic location, and school type impact students' academic success. 3. Uncover the shortcomings of NEAEA's data reporting methods and statistical analysis techniques. Our research highlights the need for improved data collection and analysis methodologies to provide more accurate and reliable insights into student performance. Ready to dive into the full policy brief and learn more about these fascinating findings? Drop a comment below and we'll send you the complete report, packed with compelling statistics. My research, published in the #Emerald #International #Journal of ##Development ##Issues(IJDI), challenges the myth that natural resource wealth is a guaranteed path to reduced inequality. Ethiopia's experience reveals a more complex reality. While natural resource rents can initially worsen inequality, strategic investments in manufacturing and well-targeted social spending can significantly mitigate these negative effects. To achieve sustainable development and social equity, Ethiopia must prioritize prudent resource management and inclusive industrialization. #Ethiopia #naturalresources #inequality #manufacturing #development #economics #ARDLmodel #Kuznetscurve #socialspending #inclusivedgrowth. https://lnkd.in/e2yrUyPF

From Research to Action: How Community Researchers in Nairobi Drive Social Change Every year, billions are lost to ineffective research in low-income areas. In Nairobi, with over 100 informal settlements, many research projects don’t lead to real change. However, a new approach is making a difference: collaboration with community researchers. At the Nairobi Urban Hub, local researchers from Nairobi, Kenya, and experts from Erasmus University Rotterdam are working with community researchers, and residents from the informal settlements, to promote social transformation. Community researchers bridge the gap between academic research and real-world challenges. They use inclusive methods—dialogues, workshops, and storytelling—to ensure the research addresses the actual needs of residents. This partnership empowers communities, driving local action and policy change. The knowledge stays in the community, ensuring a lasting impact. 👉 Read the full article and watch the extended version of this video here: https://bit.ly/47KphFT #CommunityResearch #UrbanResilience #SocialChange #NairobiUrbanHub #Kenya #FrugalInnovation #UrbanDevelopment Bosibori B. Low- and middle-income countries (#LMICs), including those in Africa, face barriers in shaping #research agendas on a myriad of critical issues – but there are some strategies that can help overcome these, reports Eve Ruwoko on the Science Summit at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (New York, 10-27 September). Research #funding has been noted to be more concentrated in high-income countries, while the lack of infrastructure such as laboratories and lower salaries constrained the involvement of LMIC professionals. This has resulted in the significant under-representation of their work, ideas and creativity globally. To overcome the challenges, the panellists emphasised the need to prioritise the involvement of LMICs in decision-making, support research agendas tailored to local needs, drive inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration, and foster critical thinking, leadership development and advocacy in academia. 🔎🔬🌾🏗️🌱Read the full story in UWN: https://lnkd.in/dDdkamC7 #health #education #climatechange #research #digitalinfrastructure #SDGs #partnership #collaboration Fiona Makoni University of Zimbabwe Makerere University College of Health Sciences Network of African Science Academies african mental health research initiative amari

Zero hunger is one of the United Nations' 2030 Goals for Sustainable Development. But in a world of conflict, pandemics, and rampant inequality, how can these goals be realistically and sustainably achieved? Yesterday, I submitted my bachelor's thesis titled "Determinants of Childhood Malnutrition in Rwanda: A Distributional Regression Approach" at Bielefeld University. In it, I'm performing a GAMLSS-based statistical analysis to determine and quantify the causes of growth retardation among children aged 0 to 59 months in Rwanda. This sub-Saharan African nation has seen exceptional economic growth over the last 20 years and is striving to position itself as the next major international business hub. But with the country's literal future at stake, can these ambitions be achieved? I spent about four months working on my thesis, and I'm pretty proud of it, so I thought I might share it here for anyone who's interested in it. Fingers crossed that my supervising professors like it as much as I do 🤞. Special thanks go to The Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) Program for kindly supplying me with a huge dataset from their 2020-21 survey conducted in Rwanda!

📄 New Research: Do Social Protection Programs Reduce Conflict Risk? Evidence from a Large-Scale Safety Net Program in Rural Ethiopia ✨We are excited to share the latest paper, "Do Social Protection Programs Reduce Conflict Risk? Evidence from a Large-Scale Safety Net Program in Rural Ethiopia," authored by Kalle Hirvonen, Elia Machado, and our DA associate Andrew M. Simons. Prepared for presentation at the 2024 Agricultural & Applied Economics Association Annual Meeting in New Orleans, on July, 2024, this study evaluates the impact of Ethiopia’s Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP), one of the largest public works programs globally, on conflict risk. 📚Using difference-in-differences methods and linking administrative and geocoded conflict data, the research examines the effects of the PSNP on violent events, demonstrations, and conflict-related fatalities. The findings reveal that while the PSNP did not significantly affect the risk of violent events, it did reduce the occurrence of demonstrations and fatalities, particularly during the 2014-18 period marked by widespread protests in Amhara and Oromia. 🌟 Our associate Dr Andrew Simons is an applied microeconomist focused on policy-relevant research for developing countries. His work addresses barriers to adopting health and welfare technologies, evaluates scalable social protection programs, and explores sustainability issues. Using econometric methods and micro-level data from field experiments and geospatial sources, Dr. Simons combines his academic expertise with practical experience from seven years in senior NGO management roles in Ethiopia and Honduras. He earned his PhD in Applied Economics and Management from Cornell University and a Master of Public Administration in International Development from Harvard University. Currently, he serves as an associate professor at Fordham University and an adjunct associate professor at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. His research has been published in notable journals, including the Journal of Development Economics and Nature Food. 🔗To read the paper, please visit: https://lnkd.in/dXXZB_i5 🔗To learn more about Dr Andrew Simons, please visit: https://lnkd.in/dW8pfwhE #SocialProtection #ConflictRisk #Ethiopia #PublicPolicy #SafetyNetPrograms Photo Credit: Sylwia Pecio / World Bank
