Forests don’t have to be huge to be valuable. GCA Member club Hancock Park GC grant money supported the creation of a microforest in Griffith Park, in the heart of Los Angeles, the first of this type in California. Using the Miyawaki method, strictly local, indigenous species are planted very densely, with layers of vegetation (understory, shrub, tree, and overstory trees) planted side by side to provide a thick, impenetrable quality over time. While they require watering and weeding for the first two years, after that, microforests are self-sustaining, maintaining themselves with rainfall and leaf litter for weed control. The positive impact of microforests on biodiversity, pollution mitigation, reduction of surface temperatures, urban beautification and carbon sequestration are endless, and all this can be achieved even in a 10 foot by 10 foot area! #conservation #Miyawaki #microforest #biodiversity #gardencreateadvocate

Every mangrove forest we save today will be a fortress against the challenges of tomorrow - David Attenborough . First celebrated on July 26, 2016, the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem was established by UNESCO. This day raises public awareness about the importance of mangroves, highlights the significance of mangrove ecosystems, and promotes their sustainable management and conservation. Mangroves play a crucial role in coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and climate regulation. They provide habitat for many species and protect shorelines from erosion and storm surges. They provide crucial breeding grounds and nurseries for many marine species as well as being a home for a variety of birds. . Mangroves face several significant threats that endanger their ecosystems and the vital roles they play. They are often cleared for shrimp farming, rice paddies, and other agricultural uses. Coastal areas are frequently developed for housing, infrastructure, and industrial purposes, leading to the destruction of mangrove habitats. Pollutants from factories and industrial sites can contaminate mangrove environments. Plastic waste can suffocate mangrove roots and disrupt the ecosystem. Dams and water management projects, as well as the harvest for timber and fuelwood, lead to the mangroves deforestation… . Mangroves act as natural barriers against storm surges, coastal erosion, and tsunamis. Their dense root systems stabilize shorelines and reduce the impact of wave action. They also are significant carbon sinks, absorbing and storing large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thus helping mitigate climate change. Many coastal communities depend on mangroves for their livelihoods, including fishing, aquaculture, and tourism. Implementing sustainable management practices that involve local communities and stakeholders helps establish protected areas and restore mangrove habitats. . Protecting Ecosystems: A Vital Endeavor Protecting ecosystems is crucial for maintaining biodiversity, regulating climate, and supporting human life. Ecosystems, which consist of living organisms interacting with their environment, are the foundation of our planet's health. They provide essential services such as clean air, fresh water, and fertile soil. However, these systems are under constant threat from human activities, including deforestation, pollution, and urbanization. To protect ecosystems, we can adopt several strategies. First, conservation efforts such as establishing protected areas and national parks help safeguard natural habitats. Sustainable practices in agriculture and forestry can minimize damage to the environment, ensuring that ecosystems remain resilient. Additionally, restoring degraded ecosystems—like reforestation and wetland rehabilitation—can bring back lost biodiversity and improve ecosystem functionality. Community involvement is also key to protecting ecosystems. Educating people about the importance of biodiversity and engaging them in conservation initiatives can lead to more sustainable practices. Collaborative efforts between governments, non-profits, and local communities are vital for creating effective conservation strategies. At our self-sustainable city project, we are committed to implementing these principles to foster a healthy ecosystem. To know more about how we are applying these practices, read our blog articles at https://lnkd.in/gU3nFcHh #ProtectingEcosystems #Biodiversity #SustainableLiving #Conservation #EcoFriendly #ClimateAction

These trees—Cottonwoods, Mulberries, False Indigo, and Pears—have been growing for just one season, but the transformation is already visible. It’s the type of growth that makes you pause and reflect. In Colorado, here's what trees need to succeed: Earthworks, silvopasture, and water management systems to maximize water retention and soil health in these arid conditions. You can't just plant trees. You have to design for the entire ecosystems to thrive. At Metacarbon Farm, we’re seeing firsthand what’s possible when dryland restoration is done right. This land is exploding with life, and it’s only the beginning. It’s a testament to the power of dryland agroforestry and the impact of strategic earthworks in regions prone to drought. As we continue to monitor the progress, it’s exciting to envision how these ecosystems will not only enhance biodiversity but also sequester carbon, improve water retention, and create sustainable systems that future generations can rely on. We’re all about taking on the challenges of dryland restoration head-on and thanks to our partners at Boulder County Climate Innovation and Zero Foodprint, we were able to put this project into motion. In addition, as we continue to monitor the progress of our work, the Carbon Institute in California is funding data collection and analysis. Together, we’re not only studying the resilience and growth of these ecosystems but also exploring how they can contribute to local food production. This partnership enables us to dive deeper into regenerative practices that enhance both ecological health and food security. #DrylandRestoration #Agroecology #ClimateResilience #Silvopasture #WaterManagement #CarbonSequestration #RegenerativeAgriculture

🌱🌍 Happy Earth Day from our farming family! 🌍🌱 Today, as we celebrate our beautiful planet, we're reminded of our deep connection to the land. From sunrise to sunset, we work hand in hand with Mother Nature to nurture our crops and care for our animals. - Our lands are in environmental schemes in partnership with Natural England and are LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) Marque Assured. - Over the last decade we've planted over 1000,000 new trees, including orchards to encourage birds and wildlife. - All our fields have buffer margins to protect wildlife. - We've planted wild seed meadows to help with biodiversity. - We've installed over 6mw of renewable energy. - We aim for a closed loop system; muck from the animals is used to replace artificial fertilisers, straw from the fields is used to bed the animals. We believe in farming in a way that increases regeneration and biodiversity, all having a positive impact on the land and the animals. #EarthDay2024 #EarthDay #FarmingLife #SustainableLiving #environment
