If a sportscar could talk, how might it respond if you asked where it feels most at home? Most are driven on the road, but if you were to quiz a Porsche, perhaps it might say the racetrack. Going all the way back to the unveiling of the first ever hashtag #Porsche in 1948, the 356, racing’s influence is a significant element of the company’s DNA. And the greatest challenges of all for any driver, amateur or professional, are the world’s elite racetracks – those unique pieces of real estate that have held Grand Prix, past and present. Here, speed, adrenaline and driving skills merge into a unique experience. There’s even a special Porsche Paint To Sample colour named after these tracks – Grand Prix White. Porsche's 239-page annual report for 2023 has been released. The most important details mentioned in the lengthy document are the news related to the 911 hybrid car, as we will see the new sports car early this summer with a six-cylinder engine. It is described as an “ultra-sporty hybrid” and promises to make the popular sports car “faster and more efficient.” The part-hybrid model will be a new member of the revamped 911 lineup, and will likely be known by its codename “992.2.” Interestingly, Porsche hints that there will be more than just one version with a hybrid setup, saying that the technology will be used in "select derivatives of the 911 model line." A car ahead of its time - the Porsche 959! This particular example is the Gruppe B prototype. It was originally shown off at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show as a concept for the Group B Rally Championship. However, the Group B era came to an abrupt end in 1986 following the incident at Tour de Corse. Effectively cancelling the series. So Porsche switched focus. The 959 Gruppe B prototype was now the springboard for the 959 road car that we all know today. The road car itself was technological wonder for the time. Sporting a sequential Twin Turbo 2.8L Flat-Six making nearly 450hp, mated to a 6-Speed manual transmission with one gear named Gelände or "Terrain", as it was originally developed for rallying. The 959 also featured the formidable PSK (Porsche Steuer Kuppling) all-wheel drive system with on-the-fly torque split. All of this on the road was good for a verified 197mph and a 0-60 of 3.7 seconds. Both were good for Guinness World records for a production road car at the time. A lesser known fact though, Porsche actually lost money on every single example they built. Costing twice as much as the debut price at the time. Thus the low production run. A total of 292 customer cars were completed. Though 337 were made in total, including the 37 prototypes and pre-production models.
