This morning, crews and contractors were continuing work on the new SAGE Center expansion overflow parking area, landscaping, and applying stucco to the building’s exterior. Everything is taking shape and we are excited to see this project complete and open. 50% of the construction installer workforce is due to retire in the next 5 years 🚨 That was one of the scariest stats that I learned at The British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installation (BiKBBI)’s excellent Annual Conference last week in London. The event taking place during #NationalApprenticeshipWeek couldn’t have been more apt, as well over half of the day’s discussion centred around how to make apprenticeships more attractive to both the workforce of tomorrow and to the businesses who will desperately require these new workers in the very near future. 'Driving industry change through collaboration' was the theme of the event. If we want to solve this oncoming crisis, we’ll need collaboration from much more than just the people who met in London last week. Better access to: • Education pathways • Government support • Incentives to drive the young to want to join this industry are all going to be vital steps to begin solving this crisis in the coming years. Salford City Council has granted planning permission for the next phase of the Pendleton regeneration project by SP+ and Lovell Together — a joint venture between Lovell Partnerships Ltd and Together Housing Group. The project involves the creation of 485 energy-efficient, low carbon homes built to the Future Homes Standars. It will include a mix of one- and two-bed apartments and two-, three- and four-bed homes. Several properties have been designed for older living with more than 140 homes for rent and shared ownership. Stantec developed the masterplan for this latest phase and was commissioned to provide planning, architecture, and landscape architecture services. Eddisons, AJP Engineering and Amenity Tree are also advising SP+ and Lovell Together on the project. Tahreen Shad, Regional Partnerships Director at Lovell Partnerships, says: "Our aim is to build communities through industry-leading partnerships, and the regeneration of Pendleton is the perfect example of the significant results that this approach can deliver. We will also continue to work with Salford City Skills and Salford Build Up to engage with workers of the future offering apprenticeships and job opportunities. Nice article for those not in the industry to read. However, I want to make it clear: BOTH Merit (Non Union) and Union companies have legitimate apprenticeship programs. It takes both types of companies to build projects for our City and if we keep up with this divisive mentality (only using Union companies or use of PLA's) then we are just hurting our small local contractors and ultimately our local economy (Non Union make up ~80% of contractors in MO and ~90%+ in KS.)

This National Apprenticeship Week, our UK Senior Economist Pablo Cristi Worm speaks to Construction Management magazine about what could be done to help mitigate persistent skills shortages and difficulties in attracting new talent. Read now: https://bit.ly/3w8ZloM Current efforts to address the recruitment crisis are not producing the desired results, and the number of young people enrolling in construction trainee programmes has now dropped to just a quarter from 2007 levels. Even though apprenticeship starts in construction are 8.3% higher than five years ago, the number dropped by 5.9% between the 2021 and 2022 financial years. It is essential that the sector reverses this trend and boosts both the number of ways into the industry and the attractiveness of construction as a whole. Pablo says: “To shake off old stereotypes, the sector must continue to digitalise and embrace the latest innovations. This stretches from AI and a wider adoption of digital tools to analyse data, to modern methods of construction and greater automation.
