🇬🇧Heads up UK! On Thursday we attended the British Fashion Council's Positive Fashion Forum for a second time. It's an inspiring gathering of innovative circular fashion businesses, passionate activists and discerning brands learning about what they can do to make the fashion industry better for both planet and people. 💪🏼➕💪🏼 By supporting and inspiring brands to commit to positive change, we signed the 'Pledge to Repair' initiated by our friend Josephine Philips of SOJO, as a new coalition for repair awareness and accessibility in UK. The pledge brings global brands active in the UK together, committing to extending the life of the items they produce through repair. This coalition will help to form a foundation for more centralised data reporting and an ability for us within the fashion industry to collectively push for legislative change in the UK - whether that be around Right-to-Repair, removing VAT from repair or EPR. ✅ At United Repair Centre it is a key part of our mission to advocate for the implementation of repair globally, so are delighted to be joining in this community who are imbedding circular solutions, and effecting industry-wide change! 🙌🏼 Interested in being part of the Pledge to Repair? Support the movement by reducing textile waste in the fashion industry: https://lnkd.in/eQMqRE6X

Allbirds is a manufacturer of very comfortable footwear but did you also know that Allbirds is one of the companies leading the charge in creating sustainable products? In 2021, the company launched the Allbirds Flight Plan - the plan to “cut their carbon footprint in half by the end of 2025, then reduce it to near zero by 2030.” How are they doing this? The following is the interesting and informative explanation from the Allbirds website: “Roughly 57% of footwear and 64% of apparel is made from synthetic materials. The problem with synthetic materials? They’re made from plastics. Plastics come from oil. And oil is a fossil fuel that’s accelerating climate change. What’s even weirder about the link between fashion and fossil fuels is that these materials weren’t widely used in our industry until the 1980s. But we’ve quickly become dependent on them. The reliance on fossil fuels is accelerating climate change, creating negative impacts on waste, biodiversity, and more. Which is why we need to transition back to renewable, natural materials. From day one, we’ve always sought to replace petroleum-based synthetic materials with natural alternatives whenever we can. When we haven’t found suitable alternatives, we’ve either invented our own—like SweetFoam®, our shoe sole material derived from the world’s first carbon negative green EVA—or invested in novel solutions, like Plant Leather, our 100% natural, plant-based leather. Of course, all of this comes with challenges. To help increase durability, we use recycled synthetics to bolster natural material content where we need to, and are innovating around new technologies to increase the performance and longevity of natural materials. On top of that, we know two important truths: we should be minimizing the amount of material we use in the first place to create lighter products, so we're working to redesign packaging and eliminate manufacturing waste. And in the spirit of fewer, better things, we should aim to keep products in use longer, so we continue to think how we can give them new life when you're done using them.” Thank you for being awesome and sustainable Allbirds! https://lnkd.in/gXW4ZdaB #Allbirds #FashionIndustry #SustainableFashion #Footwear #ComfortableFootwear #SustainableFootwear #AllbirdsFlightPlan #SustainableBusiness #GoGreen #SustainabilityMatters #SustainabilityMattersAtAquent #AquentSustainability #CircularEconomy #ReduceReuseRecycle #SustainableMaterials #ZeroPlastic #SustainableManufacturing #ResponsibleBusiness #CSR #CorporateSocialResponsibility #SocialImpact

A leading example of our coaltion members championing our efforts! See below for what ThredUp said in their Q1 Earnings on American Circular Textiles (ACT)! "As we remain committed to balancing purpose and profits, it’s also worth noting how we’re driving impact beyond our core business. We’ve recently started to see our advocacy efforts take shape at the federal level. As a founding member of the American Circular Textiles coalition, we helped advocate for the inclusion of $14 billion of incentives for textile circularity in the #AmericasAct, a bipartisan trade bill that was introduced by U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy and Michael Bennett in March. This is a historic moment as it’s the first time federal legislation has contemplated circular fashion. We believe recognizing circularity’s potential to strengthen the U.S. economy from both an environmental and international trade perspective is a huge step forward for the industry. Until fashion is no longer one of the most damaging sectors of the global economy, we will continue to advocate for the government to provide resources that make fashion and textile industries more sustainable and planet-friendly."
