The nation’s largest food and beverage chains increased sales 7.5% last year to $417.1 billion. According to a report by Chain Store Age, that figure was bolstered by price increases. The data is from a preview of Datassential’s annual top 500 chains report. It says the nation’s largest chains increased locations 2.1% last year to 238,152.
In terms of total units, Subway (20,133), Starbucks (16,346) and McDonald’s (13,449) led the way in 2023. McDonald’s was No. 1 in systemwide sales last year at $52.9 billion, followed by Starbucks ($29.9 billion) and Chick-fil-A ($21.5 billion).
McDonald’s and Chick-fil-A were both among the top 100 radio advertisers in the latest weekly list released by Media Monitors.
“There was only one change in ranking among the top 10 chains by units compared to last year,” Chain Store Age writes, “with Domino’s Pizza overtaking Burger King with 6,854 locations nationwide. In terms of sales, Chipotle moved ahead of Subway, with sales of $9.87 billion in 2023.”
By individual segments, according to Datassential, salad/healthy chains saw unit growth of 17% vs. 2022. That was followed by chicken restaurants (12%), dessert/snack chains (10.1%) and coffee chains (9.8%).
The report also utilized consumer surveys to rank chains on service, quality and experience. The top five in terms of food quality included Texas Roadhouse, Chick-fil-A, Longhorn Steakhouse, Cheesecake Factory and Ruth’s Chris Steak House.
For customer service, Chick-fil-A was the highest rated, followed by Texas Roadhouse, Longhorn Steakhouse, Cheesecake Factory and In-N-Out Burger. And for best in terms of experience, it was Chick-fil-A, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Texas Roadhouse, Maggiano’s Little Italy and In-N-Out Burger.
