Did you know that US 1 which runs right through #DowntownDelray ends in Fort Kent, Maine? The story of US 1 begins in 1925 with creation of the US numbered highway system. Main east-west roads were given even numbers and the major north-south highways were assigned odd numbers. That's how the Atlantic Coast Highway running from Fort Kent, Maine to Miami, Florida became US 1. In 1939, Florida extended US 1 to Key West, stretching 2,446 miles. In the mid-1970s, the state DOT widened US 1 to three lanes. But that caused cars to come speeding through Downtown Delray Beach. Our city's walkability was being greatly impacted. In the early 2000s, city leaders along with the DDA and CRA lobbied to return the road back to 2 lanes in each direction through Downtown Delray. US 1 went through an extensive $14 million construction project to reduce the lanes, add sidewalk space, bike lanes and make it more pedestrian-friendly through our town. Delray is one of the most walkable downtowns in all of South Florida, with our main street going all the way to the beach and the changes to US 1 are another reason we are the #VillageByTheSea! #LoveDelray

Great to see vibrant activity in the Indy area; Esp at Castleton.The plan lays out recommendations for $169 million in added assessed value for the mall area; $96 million in the proposed Howland Greenway; and $150 million along the Nickel Plate. It estimates 336,000 square feet of repositioned or new retail space would be added, along with 458,000 square feet of office space, more than 600 hotel rooms, about 1,750 multifamily units and 34 acres of parking. The report suggests waterfront, boardwalk-type development along a stormwater pond south of 82nd Street, as well as a pedestrian arcade. Those features would be surrounded by such developments as covered parking, a hotel, and residential and retail space. It also imagines the former Sears store on the east side of Castleton Square Mall as an entertainment space, including a small stage and outdoor seating on a plaza. New offices, residential buildings and concealed parking structures are proposed for the far-eastern portion of the property, along with new internal streets. But all those changes would require buy-in from area developers and property owners, including local firms Simon Property Group, The Broadbent Co. and Sunbeam Development Corp., experts say.

Lets remind people of where we are on this journey. In 2022 the federal and provincial governments jointly announced an investment of more than $1 billion to help Stellantis retool its Canadian auto plants – including its facility in the City of Brampton – to make electric vehicles. Stellantis is investing another $2.4 billion to its electrification projects. At its Brampton Assembly Plant, Stellantis is in the process of installing a flexible assembly line capable of producing battery-electric and hybrid vehicles. This overhaul will diversify the automaker’s capacity to meet growing consumer demand for low-emission vehicles. The Stellantis facility is an anchor of Brampton’s automotive industry, and significantly impacts the local economy, providing approximately 3,000 manufacturing jobs. It also provides many indirect jobs across the province. It is estimated that for every one job at an automotive facility, as many as five to six indirect jobs are created. This transaction was an important step to renewing the Stellantis plant. As a result of retooling, surplus lands were identified in discussions with the City of Brampton that could be sold as complementary employment uses. We wanted to make sure the surplus lands could be optimized and yet remain compatible with the surrounding uses.
