🤔 This is a quote from 1960 that still describes many command-and-control orgs of today. In "The Human Side of Enterprise”, Douglas McGregor discussed the team-based organizations of his time as being dominated by rigid hierarchy, complicated processes and monolithic priorities defining the day-to-day. However, he also observed empowered teams as well. He described these thriving teams as embodying several common characteristics across industries: 1️⃣ Informal, comfortable, relaxed atmospheres 2️⃣ Active participation in discussions 3️⃣ A clear understanding of tasks or objectives 4️⃣ Constructive disagreements are welcome 5️⃣ Consensus-driven decisions and non-dominating leadership are the norm 6️⃣ Periodic self-assessment of how things are done 7️⃣ A general environment where 'members listen to each other’ The debate continues today, although, given the uncertainty and complexity of the modern market I struggle to see how command-and-control organizations can sustain creative and collaborative teams. Culture is a top-down function. Therefore, the C-Level team must accept responsibility for creating, sustaining, and the continuous transformation efforts of the organization's culture. Few leaders fully grasp the scale of the wasted potential they have in their own teams and organizations and the enormous opportunity it represents. Data shows us the urgent need to recognize, understand and close your interaction gaps. Because the quality of interaction has such a profound impact on nearly everything that happens in an organization, it’s surprising that achieving more effective interaction (“closing interaction gaps,” in our terms) is so rarely made a priority. Yet, in other ways, it’s not surprising at all because many leaders are taught to pay attention to strategy and execution—identifying the big goals for their group or organization and then implementing the processes and systems to get there. The need to think about the effectiveness of interaction simply hasn’t been part of the picture. Organizations that ignore the interaction dimension of organizational effectiveness are missing a vital piece of the puzzle, and their potential to work faster, smarter, and better will remain locked behind layers of poor communication, compromised decisions, turf wars, and dysfunctional group dynamics. Half of the team had been there less than 1 year, and we were struggling with where decisions were being made. We were in Florida, standing in the middle of an open green space. We had identified 4 corners: – CEO – COO – Director of Program Delivery – Everyone else I read off the next example decision: “A key client asks us to make an exception to our cancellation policy.” The team was supposed to stand in the corner of the person/people they thought should make a decision on this request. Navigating business decisions and empowering your team efficiently can be a challenge. Exercises like this have helped my Signature Leaders team understand decision-making processes. We realized that excessive escalation of low-risk choices creates bottlenecks that all but halt productivity. Using this exercise, we practiced evaluating decisions along a risk continuum, from trivial to pivotal, and we identified areas where leaders were overly involved, impeding delegation. To foster empowerment and save time, it's crucial to avoid micromanaging and unnecessary opinions. I'm keen to hear how others approach decision-making and delegation.
