🌱 From Migrant to Entrepreneur: Empowering Communities with Homegrown School Feeding 🌱 This morning, I came across an article in the #KathmanduPost titled "Youth Exodus to India Leaves Bajura Villages with Ageing, Ailing Residents," highlighting a pressing concern regarding youth migration from Bajura to India. The article highlights the gravity of the situation, as youth migrate alongside their children, resulting in dwindling student populations and subsequent closures of schools, the elderly, frail and fragile are left behind with little to no geriatric care. Citing a study by the Ministry of Social Development of Sudurpaschim Province conducted two years ago, the article reports that over #266000 individuals from the province migrate to India annually. This alarming trend underscores the urgent need for enhanced livelihood opportunities, as improved local prospects could potentially mitigate the need for migration among the working population. In the midst of this challenge, I was reminded of a Case Story that was shared by my team member based in Bajura santosh Sharma a few days back - A story of hope of Dhanalal Bishwakarma dai who made the courageous decision to return from India to his hometown in Swami Kartik RM-1, Muktikot of #Bajura, with a vision to establish Sharmila Agriculture and Livestock Farm. Introduced to the Home Grown School Feeding Program #HGSF), Dhanalal dai saw an opportunity to thrive locally. As a program vendor, he supplies vegetables to Shree Mandala Adharbhut School feeding 296 students daily as a part of Government of Nepal (GoN)'s initiative - School Meal Programme. Dhanalal dai's journey proves that with determination and support, local initiatives like HGSFP can create sustainable livelihoods and deter youth migration. What started off as USDA and World Food Programme's nutrition focused programme has now scaled to a system level intervention with Mercy Corps, that's creating impact ranging from improving livelihood to combating migration issues. Let's build a future where staying home means success!
