Considerations for your startup...should you be for-profit, or a nonprofit? In the past, the line between nonprofit and for-profit ventures was clear, but that's no longer the case. Today, nonprofits compete with top for-profits, and for-profits can create significant social impact. Choosing the right legal structure is crucial for mission-driven startups. Learn more about what to consider when making the all important decision in this article by Harvard Business Review

CEO, Highland & Haskill Creek • Founder of Classy (acq. by GoFundMe) • Founder of nonprofit, Save Farmland
You need an Ivy League degree or know people in Silicon Valley to make it as a founder. That's what I thought when I became CEO of Classy at 24. Fact is, we started Classy with none of that. We were just a couple of average guys who didn't have: • MBAs • Live in Silicon Valley • Have investor friends • Go to Ivy League schools • Have any startup experience We started it in 2006 to raise money for cancer research after my mom had had cancer when I was growing up. $1,000 raised from friends as part of an #anchorman themed pub crawl in Pacific Beach, CA (of all things!). To say the odds were stacked against us was an understatement... I certainly didn't see myself as a real CEO. Most times I felt like I wasn't even supposed to be leading the company (or ANY company). And almost 4 years in, I found myself sleeping on the floor of a one-room apartment with my co-founder Pat Walsh because we couldn't pay rent. That was rock bottom. But what we lacked in degrees, we made up for in determination. Our numbers were small for a very long, long time - it took 6 years (!!!) to get to $1M in revenue. And we weren't in the press like our competitors, or raising massive fundraising rounds... But each step of the way (even at a small scale), we could see that what we were doing was working. And no one can take that away from you. Traction - no matter how small - is like compound interest. The longer you stay in the game the more you'll grow... Until eventually it gets so big that no one can ignore you. Later we'd go on to raise billions on the platform and grow the team to 300+ people. In 2022 Classy was acquired by GoFundMe - creating the largest giving platform in the world. So next time you're thinking about throwing in the towel, remember the story of these three average guys with no experience. Pick your head up and just keep going. You never know where it might take you.

Relevant! At each stage there is that small but relevant compounding effect. As we deliver support through the work we do, consistency is the key. Learning as we go, growing as we deliver value. #Pendocares #PendoHealth #startupstories #staffingandrecruiting #agedcareaustralia

#FlashbackFriday Last fall, I shared with Philanthropy.com about ways nonprofits and startups can partner together in philanthropic ventures. As a startup company grows, its team will build up a philanthropic routine, contributing on a recurring basis, whether money or time. Startup founders know that today they must show a social conscience or risk losing their best talent to other organizations. Turning giving into a routine is a way to keep those workers.
