Further thoughts inspired by our post about 'Culture' being incorporated into Blackpool's Town Prospectus: The use of arts, culture & heritage as a tool for placemaking and regeneration is well documented and understood. But all too often, it is an afterthought or a nice to have - a mural celebrating a local hero, a parade or event linked to local heritage. These interventions are lovely and give people a temporary sense of civic pride, but do not embed culture and heritage into place management structures. By incorporating local culture & heritage expertise into place management structures, you are also embedding authentic, creative thinking into place values, brand narrative and decision-making practices from the outset - fundamentally changing how your place is experienced. In the spirit of understanding and empathy, we recently embarked on a powerful initiative at James' Place Eastleigh that highlighted the importance of seeing the world through others' eyes. 🌍 Cicely, a dedicated member of our team, spent a day navigating life from a wheelchair. This eye-opening experience wasn't just about facing physical challenges; it was a profound journey into the everyday realities faced by many of our members. Through this act of empathy, we've gained invaluable insights into making our Eastleigh sanctuary even more accessible and welcoming. As a result, we're making practical changes, like adjusting the height of coat pegs and re-evaluating the placement of crockery, to ensure that every member of our community can enjoy a greater level of independence and ease in their daily activities. But the lessons learned go beyond physical adjustments; they touch the heart of empathy itself. Today, we're bursting with pride for all members who embraced this initiative, demonstrating a remarkable level of understanding and support for one another. Their willingness to step up and experience life from a different perspective shows a commitment to inclusivity that truly makes James' Place a family. This journey has reaffirmed our commitment to empathy, understanding, and actionable change. By trying to walk—or roll—in each other's shoes, we're not just making our spaces more accessible; we're building a community grounded in deep mutual respect and understanding. Let's continue to learn, adapt, and grow together, inspired by the courage and empathy shown by our team and members. You want me to eat what? One of my fondest childhood memories is this little shop that sold bierocks. I found it so random that a Bierock stand and ski shop was in my Black neighborhood. At the time I had no idea what skiing was, and I definitely had not a clue about galuskies or Bierocks. Nor was I willing to try them. Fast forward 10 years and I attended college at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Ks. And coincidentally Volga Germans had settled in Hays, Ks. And what did I find myself eating, Bierocks and galuskies. LOL! 10 years later, I found myself in Breckenridge, Colorado on a ski slope. D!versity is SO important in many ways. We must move the conversation beyond saviorism. Beyond, me and my privileges saving others. Beyond I must be an ally because people need my help. We need to get to a place where we co-exist. Where differences are comforting. These white businesses did not have a problem being in my predominately Black neighborhood. I never had a problem with them. In fact, I felt comfortable browsing around the ski shop and ordering a drink from the Bierock stand. I felt comfortable that when it came time for me to try new things, I was willing to. I was comfortable with these things that weren’t culturally relevant to me, because they were familiar to me. And in an odd way, they were a part of my culture. Because white shops were comfortable being in community with Black folks. You know… We need Black shops in predominantly white neighborhoods. We need mosques next to the Lutheran church. We need the artist next to the scientist. We need to community. Occasionally when I visit home, I make sure to visit the community that shaped me. I drive by Central avenue and past a few of my fondest memories. The Slope Ski shop that sits on the north side of the street. And the Bierock stand that sits on the south side. Hi everyone! Mark Maxfield here, CEO of The Cottages Assisted Living & Memory Care. Those who work for me know that culture is one of the most important things to me for my company. I hired a company President a little over a year ago, which has allowed me to work on the growth and culture of my company. Culture is often what you see, hear, and feel when you walk into your place of business. For me it would be one of our assisted living communities. Recently we had all of our community summer BBQs. I was able to go to ten of them and they were fantastic. I’ve been very impressed with how many people from our other communities showed up to help their sister communities. They assisted with preparing the meals, setting up decorations, and cleaning up. It involved a lot of work. So, my message for you leaders this month is, are you fostering an environment in your culture where people feel comfortable helping other people do their jobs? That means you have to be ok with cross training and cross supporting, so that people don’t feel siloed and like it’s a competition. It shouldn’t feel like a competition. Instead, it should feel like, this is our team. This is our company. How can we help each other to be successful? That’s one thing that I’ve noticed that is really improving in our company. I’m so proud of that and great job everyone! As a leader that is something you can look forward to as well. Making sure that everyone feels safe so that they feel like they can help everyone. In so doing, your entire company will be successful. I cried the whole way on the 11-hour flight to Phoenix 19 years ago. Turns out I hadn’t really thought about just how far away it was from the UK when I chose it for my Masters degree. (Truth is, I’d mainly picked it for the weather). When I first landed, full of emotion and self-doubt, I had no idea I was setting foot in a city that would capture my heart and spur my deepest passions for community development. At the time, downtown Phoenix was a ghost town after hours (my fellow Phoenicians will remember) – quiet streets with little but offices and the occasional sports fan heading to a game. Fast forward to now, and downtown is unrecognizable from those days: Restaurants, bars, hotels, cultural hubs, and independent shops. And I’ve witnessed that transformation during my time here. And it’s part of what made me fall in love with the city. Unlike the fully-formed cities back in England that felt somewhat ‘finished’, Phoenix was still sketching its identity. Just as I was in my early twenties. It was evolving, and the thought of contributing – even in a small way – to its growth was irresistibly exciting. Today, I see a thriving downtown that buzzes with life all day and night. I'm reminded that while my role was teeny tiny – being part of this transformation has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. To those who initially questioned my choice – I've learned that I'm driven by the possibility of what can be, not just what already exists.
