Dear recruiter, practice manager, lab manager, HR manager: the reason I get paid at a much higher rate than most phlebotomist; I walked into a lab today and the IOP had unsuccessfully stuck a patient twice. The office MA was just finishing up her unsuccessful second attempt. They asked me to try. One shot success. Patient experience matters! Phlebotomy experience matters!

Senior Remote Site Monitor at PPD, part of Thermo- Fisher Scientific | Black Women In Clinical Research Brand Ambassador 🔬
The #clinicalresearchindustry is multi-faceted. Without knowing this, it can be hard to understand how your skills can transfer for a role. I can use myself as an example. I initially started off bench level in a lab before becoming a care attendant/nursing assistant (depending on where you located). After doing patient care, I decided I wanted to do something else since I had no intention of pursuing a nursing/medical path. That was when I was able to secure an interview for a site level role as a research assistant. This role required me to deal with patients directly in oncology, but not all the time. My primary job was to enter data, schedule biopsies, build kits, request archival tissue, etc. It was those skills from being a care attendant combined with my lab work and degree that helped me secure that position. All that to say, it can be done and if you need help getting there use Black Women In Clinical Research ® career services at www.bwicr.com #nursingtoclinicalresearch #yourexperiencematters #bwicr #careattendant #researchassistant #monitoring

5 things I require of my medical students during their Ob-Gyn rotation: 1. Play more, study less. This is always met with a look of astonishment and fear. Some think it’s a trap. And I go on to explain the science behind play and how it makes us smarter, more efficient and happier. We can then compromise on at least 1 hour of play during their 6 week rotation 🤣 2. Be your (damn) self I don’t care about the regurgitated BS that you were taught to say on rotation. I care about who you REALLY are, what you value and why. 3. Recognize your inherent worth Unrelated to the degree you’re working for or the grades you get. You matter because you’re YOU. Don’t dilute yourself for a career. 4. Know the risk of suicide as a physician I want you to know that suicide is more common among doctors. I want to know that taking time off, talking about your feelings with a therapist and being on medication are all normal and ok. 5. Know your purpose If you don’t know your purpose yet, know that it’s NOT to “become a doctor”. You can work as a doctor if that brings you joy and fulfillment, but your purpose is so much more than your job. Separate your purpose from your career and you will have more clarity about what you’re meant to do and be. What do you teach your medical students? Attending a top phlebotomy school is an excellent start to any phlebotomy career because they’re designed to build strong foundational skills. That’s what employers in the Bay Area are looking for when they hire phlebotomists. But the reputability of the program isn’t all they consider. Most employers want to hire phlebotomy school graduates with the following traits: Attention to Detail: Accuracy is crucial in any healthcare setting, but it’s imperative when blood collection is involved. Strong attention to detail is critical to avoid errors in sample collection and patient identification. Communication Skills: Phlebotomists interact with patients who may be nervous or confused by the procedure. They have to clearly explain blood collection to patients while sharing essential information with medical staff. Empathy: Compassion and empathy are important qualities in any healthcare profession; phlebotomy is no exception. You must be able to put patients at ease when they are anxious or uncomfortable during blood collection. Problem-Solving Skills: Phlebotomists may encounter difficult blood draws or challenging situations. Employers value individuals who can handle such scenarios calmly and find appropriate solutions. Team Mindset: Phlebotomists represent a link in a large chain of healthcare professionals. Even the ones who work in laboratories or other isolated positions will have to collaborate with others to ensure efficient patient care. Physical Stamina: One of the essential skills of phlebotomists is stamina! They may be on their feet for extended periods and need to lift or move equipment. Employers prefer candidates who can handle the physical aspects of the job. If these are traits that you have, then a phlebotomy school, like BAMA Institute, may be a great option for you. By working with an accredited, reputable training institution, you can expand your career options as you enter this rewarding field. “TV and movies don't always show the laboratory correctly or in a good light. There is so much more than pushing a button or dipping a stick. If you are thinking about a lab job, a good lab tech is inquisitive, pays attention to detail, does not cut corners, follows directions, and does not compromise on ethics. Each specimen is a patient counting on you to help figure out what is wrong or if their meds are doing what they are supposed to or just if they are healthy. If you are someone who wants to be in the health field but does not want too much patient contact and has the above characteristics, then I would recommend becoming a Laboratory professional. But realize, you will be the invisible piece of the health care industry, assisting in diagnosing patients without any glory or praise except you knowing that they couldn't diagnose without us.” Taking a chance on healthcare, led Joanne to a fulfilling, long career: “When I was a senior in high school, I did not know what I wanted to do. My mom sent information in the healthcare field to a local college. Her sister was an RN, and her opinion was there would always be a job in the health field. I first chose X-ray, not knowing anything about either Lab or X-ray. They only took 2 students that year and I wasn't one of them. So up next was Laboratory. I registered for classes and was told the program was now an Associate Degree, upgraded from the CLA Certificate program that was being phased out. Which was great for me! I have been a Medical Laboratory Technician for 40 years.” #MedicalLabProfessionalsWeek #HealthcareJobs
