Navigating the job market can be incredibly disheartening, especially when you have clear goals and aspirations. Since moving to Houston a year ago, I’ve applied to over 1000 positions, with my dream job being a research assistant at MD Anderson. Despite my efforts, I’ve only managed to secure one interview. The reality that it’s often about who you know rather than what you know has been repeatedly emphasized to me, and it’s a bitter pill to swallow. It’s frustrating to have invested so much in my education—holding a bachelor’s degree and now heading into the second year of my master’s—only to find myself unable to secure even an entry-level research assistant position. What’s particularly disheartening is seeing prestigious institutions like MD Anderson and UT Health, which should be champions of merit-based hiring, seem inaccessible. It’s a vicious cycle: needing experience to get a job, but not being given the opportunity to gain that experience. Watching my hard-earned education seemingly go to waste is incredibly tough. It’s time for these organizations to recognize the potential in passionate, educated candidates like myself and provide the opportunities needed to gain the invaluable experience they require.

If you are working in biotech/pharma in Massachusetts, in which city should you live to 1) maximize job opportunities, 2) reduce commute time, and 3) find more affordable housing? Everyone knows that Cambridge and Boston are home to hundreds of life science companies. 477 to be exact, as of 2023. So it makes sense to live in Cambridge or Boston to be close to all these jobs. But what if you can't afford the high cost of housing? Where else in the state should you prioritize your job search? In other words, which Massachusetts city has the next highest number of life science companies? Is it Somerville, with its recent Flagship developments spilling over from Kendall Square? Or is it Watertown, with its biotech cluster at Arsenal Yards? The answer: Waltham. Waltham was home to 64 life science companies as of 2023.
