We were honored to have Sam van der Staak from International IDEA moderate our recent event, "Empowering Europe: How can the EU strengthen Democracy, Human Rights, and Rule of Law after the elections." 🎉 Judgment Alert 🎉 The Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan has accepted the European Convention on Human Rights' suggestion, acknowledging - via a unilateral declaration - that there was a violation of the applicant's rights under Articles 6 (right to a fair trial) and 11 (freedom of assembly and association) of the Convention in the case of Guliyev v. Azerbaijan (Application no. 42513/19). The applicant is represented by Mr. Ziya Guliyev. This acknowledgment by the Azerbaijani Government not only signifies a victory for the applicant, Mr. Elman Fuzuli oglu Guliyev, but also highlights the nation's dedication to honoring the commitments laid out in the European Convention on Human Rights. Such progressive actions fortify the pillars of justice and human rights in Europe and inspire continued efforts toward safeguarding individual freedoms. #HumanRights #ECHR #Law #Justice #Azerbaijan #EuropeanCourtOfHumanRights

The #EU treaties emphasize human rights and #democracy as fundamental principles. Article 2 of the Lisbon #Treaty highlights the Union's foundation on values such as human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, and respect for human rights. Compliance with these values is a prerequisite for EU #membership, and violations can lead to the suspension of membership rights. Despite their initial acceptance, these #values are now being challenged both within and outside the EU. This poses a significant threat to democratic #liberalism and the core principles upon which the EU is built. https://lnkd.in/eKjmJnRE

It's Forum on the Arms Trade annual conference time the first week of June, so you know what I'm up to... planning and promoting (and you might even see me on the screen). I'm biased, of course, but think we have some really interesting panels set up asking whether restraint on the arms trade is out the door, or if there are actually opportunities for better control given all the attention these days. Sign up and spread the word.

My blogpost on the repercussions of Russia’s withdrawal from the European Convention on Human Rights for the Russian Criminal Justice is finally out. It draws on semi-structured interviews with Russian criminal lawyers and analysis of Russian courts' judgments. One of the interesting preliminary findings is the "hidden mobilization" of the Convention. It means that lawyers interviewed are reluctant, to some extent, to renounce the rights-based semantics of the Convention. They employ the legal reasoning embedded in the ECtHR’s judgments to enhance their own arguments even after the Convention's denunciation - avoiding direct references to the Convention and the ECtHR’s judgments though. This initial structural resilience to changes is combined with the overall tendency for the human rights backlash in the Russian Criminal Justice System. https://lnkd.in/d6MjXQ6a
