Here are a few key reflections from my experience in training new engineers: Mentorship Matters: Building a strong mentorship program can make all the difference. Experienced HSE personnel and engineers guiding and supporting newcomers foster a culture of collaboration and continuous learning. 1. Hands-On Experience: Providing hands-on, real-world projects accelerates the learning curve. It not only deepens technical skills but also enhances problem-solving abilities crucial in our dynamic field. 2. Emphasizing Soft Skills: While technical proficiency is essential, let's not forget the significance of soft skills. Effective communication, teamwork, and adaptability are qualities that set exceptional engineers apart. 3. Encouraging Curiosity: Cultivate a culture that encourages curiosity. Curious minds drive innovation. Foster an environment where questions are not just welcomed but celebrated. 4. Feedback Loop: Establishing a robust feedback loop is key. Regular constructive feedback, both from mentors and peers, is instrumental in refining skills and boosting confidence. My perspective : To become a competent workplace safety officer: 1. Choose your industry from various fields, such as health, construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, mining, etc. Depending on your interest and background. 2. Earn academic and certification qualifications. Some employers may prefer candidates with a bachelor's or a diploma in safety management. Also certifications from recognised bodies, such as the NEBOSH, (IASP), or IOSH. 3. Look for a trainee or apprentice program. You can gain practical experience and learn from senior safety officers. This can also help you build your network and find job opportunities. 4. Craft a solid resume. You need to showcase your education, certifications, experience, and skills in your resume.

As an intern at Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), I've had the incredible opportunity to search and perform this activity in the world of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) and discovered the importance of Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA). 🔍 What is HIRA? Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) is a proactive process to identify potential hazards before they lead to incidents. This assessment is crucial for ensuring a safe working environment and minimizing risks to health and safety. Steps in the HIRA Process: =Identify Hazards: Review work processes, equipment, and the environment to find potential hazards. =Assess Risks: Analyze the identified hazards to determine their potential impact and the likelihood of occurrence. =Control Measures: Develop strategies to eliminate or reduce the risks associated with identified hazards. =Record Findings: Document the hazards, their associated risks, and the preventive measures taken. =Review and Update: Regularly revisit the HIRA to ensure it remains relevant and effective as conditions change. 🌟 Importance of HIRA: =Prevents Accidents: By identifying and mitigating risks early. =Protects Employees: Ensures a safer workplace and boosts morale. =Compliance: Helps in meeting legal and regulatory obligations. =Cost-effective: Reduces potential costs associated with accidents and legal issues. This article states that the energy workforce added nearly 300,000 jobs in 2022, increasing to more than 8.1 million total jobs at the end of the year, according to the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) 2023 U.S. Energy and Employment Report (USEER). Although that is a fantastic number, the article also states that Burns & McDonnell is expecting to staff 145 "Mega Projects" just this year and finding qualified talent is a challenge. While the major utility construction firms are developing programs and strategies to fulfill the workforce needs in their focus areas, MATRIX has been doing the same in ours to support this project demand. Professional risks, ubiquitous in all sectors, present both challenges and responsibilities. The modern engineer must master the art of prevention and management of these dangers to create safe and compliant work environments. During my internship on a construction site for a gasoil station in March, I immersed myself in this reality, discovering the crucial importance of anticipation and rigor. This experience refined my perspective on safety, teaching me to recognize risks, implement preventive measures, and foster a culture of safety within teams.
