The debate has shifted, The question has evolved, however. It is no longer are bonuses between procurement and sales fair, but rather, how can we incentivize procurement in an equitable and productive manner? And, how can we find a model that works industry to industry? This conversation has demonstrated procurement bonuses vary vastly from company to company, and that they are not always as attractive as what other departments receive. How do we solve this problem?

Tarmo Rautiainen, appointed Arnon’s Chief Procurement Officer in July 2024, brings global procurement insight to Arnon. Responsible for the sourcing and logistics arrangements of Arnon and its subsidiaries, as well as the company’s universal procurement strategy, he has a lot on his plate. 🚂 Unpacking the Toolbox: Sourcing, Procurement, and Purchasing at Kinkisharyo and Bonterra 🚂 Navigating the world of sourcing, procurement, and purchasing can often seem like speaking three different dialects of the same language. Having led comprehensive procurement strategies at Kinkisharyo International for building trains and later constructing an entire procurement system from scratch at Bonterra, I’ve learned firsthand that understanding the nuances between these functions is key to supply chain success. 1. Sourcing: The Foundation Layer At Kinkisharyo, sourcing involved rigorous scouting for suppliers who could meet the exacting standards required for train manufacturing. This strategic phase was about more than just finding a supplier; it was about identifying partners who could journey with us on complex projects, ensuring quality and compliance every step of the way. 2. Procurement: The Strategic Framework Building on a solid sourcing foundation, procurement at Bonterra was about crafting robust frameworks. Here, I developed systems and processes that not only facilitated the purchasing of goods and services but also ensured these activities aligned with broader business goals. This included contract negotiations, managing supplier relationships, and setting benchmarks for quality and performance. 3. Purchasing: The Execution Arm The final piece of the puzzle, purchasing, was where the rubber met the road. This was the transactional phase where I executed the acquisition of goods and services. At both Kinkisharyo and Bonterra, this meant placing orders, managing logistics, and ensuring that what was delivered matched what was promised and paid for. 🌟 Each function, while distinct, is interdependent. Sourcing sets the stage, procurement builds the script, and purchasing performs the act. Mastering each element was crucial in my roles at Kinkisharyo and Bonterra, where the ability to seamlessly integrate these functions meant the difference between mere operational functionality and standout industry excellence. 🔄 Now over to you! How do you differentiate these roles in your organization? Have you found certain strategies that help streamline these processes? Let’s share insights and learn from each other! #SupplyChainExcellence #ProcurementTransformation #SourcingStrategy #OperationalEfficiency
