I am frequently in conversations where someone will say something about wanting to "rebuild" their culture. No-can-do, bwana. You may not LIKE the culture, may want to CHANGE the culture, but remember: It’s a change management effort, not a greenfield project. Meaning it has all the corresponding efforts and challenges of any organizational change process. Now, to CHANGE culture (see what I did there?), all levers must be congruent… policies must be consistent and match reality; values must be supported by procedures and accepted norms; compensation must match desired behaviors, actions, and results. They’ve all got to work together, and when trying to change or influence a culture, you really can’t afford even small inconsistencies. Desired culture change will never take place via “programs,” off-sites, workshops or other isolated events. It’s gotta be the whole enchilada. It must have complete support of the senior-most kahunas, and necessarily reinforced (in part) via performance management. Why Change Management is an organisation's bogeyman :-) Our brain perceives change as a threat. Because of this, it activates our system's fight or flight response. People resist change because they believe they will lose something of value or fear they will not be able to adapt to new ways of working. When organisational change goes wrong, it's often because it's decided at the top with minimal engagement with the people it really affects. Employees feel unheard in the change programme. As a result, they end up demotivated and disengaged, and they become resistant.
