Multi year funding is so important for the sustainability of the sector, it provides security and enables charities to focus on what they do best. Making the same organisations submit so many applications for small amounts of short term funding is not going to achieve the impact or systemic social change required. I also would like to see funders push beyond 3 yr funding cycles and consider 5 or more as a norm.
Grant-making contacts - do take a look at this research from Institute For Voluntary Action Research on the value of multi-year funding. The findings (that multi-year funding builds trust, provides stability, aids forwards planning, and supports learning and improvements in practice) chime closely with our own experiences at Berkeley Foundation with longer term funding partnerships of 3 years+

👏 👏 👏 "Funders need to be attentive to the way that the systems they’ve created can tempt them back to prior default thinking—for example, providing relatively small, single-year restricted grants while collecting extensive amounts of information. Those defaults show up in the structure of grantmaking systems, board write-ups, and data priorities. For example, grantmaking systems could be built to prompt unrestricted, multiyear grants by default, and ask a program officer to justify a change. Board agendas could summarily stop including time to discuss individual grants and instead devote time to discussions of community needs and strategies for addressing them." 👏 👏 👏
Thank you PEAK Grantmaking for the opportunity! I enjoyed working with Kevin Bolduc to share these insights on the evolution of grantmaking practice since 2020. PEAK will be bringing the community together in conversation to more deeply examine the insights from the Journal at a virtual convening on Wednesday, February 21, from 3:00–4:15 p.m. ET/12:00–1:15 p.m. PT. https://lnkd.in/g7dQ6fxX

Two stats and one question: 1. DC only reserves 4% of its shelter resources for women experiencing homelessness. 2. New Endeavors by Women is a nonprofit dedicated to partnering with homeless women in DC to help them get the resources and support they need to transform their lives. 95% of NEW’s residents transition to permanent housing. 3. Can you join me in supporting NEW’s work as it wraps up its fiscal calendar? https://lnkd.in/e2aPXXwS

Resource Mobilisation Seminar Series: Session 2 Continuing our deep dive into resource mobilisation, we were thrilled to have TARIRO Tandi, a Resource mobilisation expert based in the US, lead a powerful panel discussion titled "Where is the Money?" Tariro’s excitement was contagious! Despite the distance and time difference, she chose to join us live via Zoom rather than sending a pre-recorded video as we had initially suggested, demonstrating her dedication to sharing valuable insights. One of her key points truly resonated with us: "When in the NGO sector, your main focus should not be about the money but rather the cause." Her advice? When seeking funding, let your passion for the cause shine through. That connection with your mission is what opens doors to the resources you need. Stay tuned for more insights from the seminar. #resourcemobilisation

UPD: Watch the session here: https://lnkd.in/e4sJysgP Yesterday Robert Carr Fund for civil society networks took part in the first informal brown bag session on Participatory Grantmaking "Let Communities Decide". Olga Rychkova, Senior Program Officer at RCF: "Participatory approach works. It makes grantmaking stronger by making sure funding reflects communities’ needs and is directed where it makes the biggest impact. However, good process is required. Participatory approaches lend legitimacy and credibility, but it is important to manage conflicts of interest in a robust, transparent way. Participatory approaches also take time and this time needs to be budgeted in." Coco Jervis of Mama Cash: "How did Mama Cash become participatory? We started out transition to participatory model by taking gradual steps, in close consultation with our donors, partners and communities. We piloted new processes and persuaded our partners that it is forth the effort. At it worked! We trust that communities are experts in their realities. This is our way of challenging hierarchies. Participatory Grantmaking is all about sharing power!" The discussion was hosted by Partos, together with Aidsfonds, Mama Cash and Wilde Ganzen. Stay tuned for more webinars!
