It's #GermanBeerDay! But with Oktoberfest, the largest German festival dedicated to beer, taking place in late September-early October, we can't help but wonder--why today? 🤔 It marks the adoption of the 'Reinheitsgebot', or Purity Law, in 1516 across the Duchy of Bavaria. The Reinheitsgebot wasn't just about purity – it was a cornerstone of market regulation. By stipulating that beer could only comprise water, barley, and hops, the law safeguarded against wheat speculation, keeping bread prices stable and local brewers thriving. Moreover, it shielded Bavarian brewers from external competition, ensuring the preservation of local traditions and the integrity of German beer. While not directly focused on food safety, the Reinheitsgebot inadvertently elevated beer quality by discouraging the use of potentially harmful ingredients. Despite some resistance, the Reinheitsgebot endures as a symbol of German brewing excellence and cultural heritage. It represents precision, patience, and the values ingrained in the brewing process. What beer will you be sipping to celebrate the occasion? 🍻 #Prost

Today marks a significant milestone in the history of brewing! On April 23, 1516, in the Bavarian town of Ingolstadt, Dukes Wilhelm IV and Ludwig X enacted what would become one of the most iconic regulations in the world of beer: the Reinheitsgebot, or the German Beer Purity Law. Originally intended for the Duchy of Bavaria, this law quickly gained traction and has since become a cornerstone of brewing tradition. It dictates that only four ingredients – water, malt, hops, and yeast – are permitted in beer production. In Germany 🇩🇪 alone, more than 1,500 breweries craft over 40 distinct styles and approximately 7,000 individual beer brands, all stemming from the simplicity of those four natural elements. Communication between lawyers is often a bit strange but at the same time can be so much fun precisely because of that. Here’s an extract of an email I sent a few days ago to colleagues from very far away lands (from our perspective) who will pay us a visit in the near future: “Could we possibly say 11:30 am? And may I ask whether you ever had a Bavarian (Bavaria is my home region; capital: Munich) white sausage breakfast (hereafter referred to as “BWSB” 😉)? This involves (pork based) sausages, sweet mustard, pretzels and – of course – beer. We can do vegetarian/non-alcoholic options as well. It is called breakfast because it is typically served before noon. A pretty decent introductory video: https://lnkd.in/e2XSseSW. In any event, we would be delighted to invite you for such a BWSB to properly welcome you in Germany (even though Berlin is far away from Bavaria), and which would serve you as an early lunch. Of course, if you prefer coffee and pastries, that is totally fine.” What do you think they answered?

Today is day of BEER Imagine it's April 23, 1516 and you're in Bavaria, where one of the coolest beer parties of all time is taking place. Why? Because Duke Wilhelm IV has just decided to change the world of beer forever - with a new law to bring order to the brewing kettle. 🎉 The Purity Law is born! 🎉 The whole thing went like this: Wilhelm and his crew were fed up with this shoddy beer brewed with everything from weird stuff like juniper berries to even weirder ingredients like crabs (okay, maybe not crabs, but you get what I mean). They thought: "Let's go back to basics. Beer should really just be made from water, hops and barley!" And voilà, the Purity Law was born. 🍺 Beer that promises purity! 🍺 This little piece of parchment was not just any old document. No, it was the start of something big. It assured every beer lover in Germany (and later worldwide) that their beer was pure and good - no unexpected ingredients, just pure, honest beer. 🎊 A reason to celebrate - every year anew! 🎊 And so it is that today, over 500 years later, we are still celebrating this ingenious idea. On German Beer Day, we toast the simplicity and purity of our favorite drink. Breweries open their doors and there are festivals everywhere to honor this glorious law. Because honestly, who needs more than water, hops and barley to have a good time? 🥳 So, raise your glass (or measure)! 🥳 Let's raise our glasses to Wilhelm, who probably had no idea that his law would have such a lasting impact on beer culture. Cheers, to pure beer and good friends! #GermanBeerDay #PurityLaw #Cheers 🍻 Picture has been created by AI

Think I it's all over? Not quite... The Euro's are off and running in Germany, and everyone's clutching their favourite beer as they will on their national teams. And everyone is looking for the extra spark of creativity to unlock the competition. So, if you are looking for something beyond the tradional 4-4-2 formation - then why not treat your tastebuds to a new beer that is serving up a unique fusion of Venezuelan and Nordic brewing styles which features our favourite insect as a key ingredient 🦗🍺 Named El Grillo, it's a Pale Ale which is a must-try for anyone looking to expand their craft beer horizons. El Grillo boasts a unique flavour profile, with hints of cricket and hibiscus - for a truly off-the-cuff beer experience. There is no doubt that this innovative 1-2 brew combination of traditional Nordic brewing techniques with the flair of South American insects is creating an unique off-pitch experience for beer lovers. Maybe it's time to cast aside the tried and tested, Gareth? The El Grillo formation might just be the kind of boundary pushing we've all been craving for. ⚽️🍺 Are you ready to experiment and try an insect beer?
