January is Poverty Awareness Month, an initiative that sheds light on poverty issues that impact the United States. According to the Economic Research Service, America's average per capita income in 2021 was $64,143, with the rural per capita income at $49,895. Based on 2021 Census Bureau data, the ERS reports that the poverty rate in the rural U.S. is 15.4%, compared with 12.8% nationwide. Trinity Development Alliance (TDA) focuses on rural communities to help support affordable housing options and critical services, tools, and resources to help empower individuals and families facing financial challenges and distress. Did you know, according to a report called Children in Deep Poverty: “There’s Nothing Left for You” from The Childhood Trust. In 2019/20, 6.5m people experienced deep poverty, almost 1.5m more people than 20 years ago, with 1m children currently estimated to be living in deep poverty. These are heart-breaking figures… Child Bed poverty is also on the increase! According to a report by Wiltshire Council, the percentage of children in relative poverty (after housing costs) in Wiltshire was 11.8% in 2021 (that’s around 70,000 children) These children may have no bed to sleep in, be sleeping in a broken bed or share a bed with siblings and/or parents as they cannot afford separate bedding.😔 Help is available; talk to us and reach out to Wiltshire Council or Wiltshire Community Federation.
