Please join MPI Southern California in celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! Tricia Yamaguchi, an MPISCC Member Volunteer, dissected a Smart Meetings article written by Jolene Jang. See below for Tricia's thoughts. "In highlighting Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, it’s time to think about how we, as meeting planners, can affect awareness and inclusion. According to Jolene Jang, in the Smart Meetings article, “Asian Inclusion with Jolene Jang”, “...meetings and meeting planners have the ability to reach a global scale. They could model what inclusivity looks like for the world. They can make a huge impact because they are the ones running the shows.” Let’s take this opportunity to think about who we want as speakers during this month and how we can highlight members of the AAPI community in our events. For those meeting planners in leadership roles, let’s take the time to think about those in the AAPI community within our teams and ensure that fostering a comfortable atmosphere allows for one to feel, “they can bring their authentic self to work.” According to Jolene Jang, an Asian Inclusivity Consultant, “A lot of times Asian Americans are going to assimilate to make it easier for everybody else, but they lose themselves by not bringing their whole self to work…” Fostering awareness of this can allow leaders to think about better ways to create an inclusive culture within their companies or departments. As we celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, let’s be mindful and bring awareness to the forefront of planning. "

Representation I had a moment… and it’s worth talking about. If I am honest, the representation of people of colour in the workplace is not something I have always been conscious of, even as a British South Asian. Call me lucky, privileged, or naïve, but I hadn’t given much thought to my race or acknowledged the prejudiced experiences I had buried deep in my subconscious, until the Black Lives Matter movement. Now, like many of us, I can’t help but notice representation, or the lack of it, all the time. So a couple of weeks ago, at our Cocktails In The City activation in London, where we worked with the wonderful team at Thin White Duke to create “Asian-inspired” cocktails, it really hit me when myself, Rico Grewal, Varun Sarna and Sherwin Acebuche were all standing together in our corner of  Bedford Park promoting our authentically Asian brands... We were doing it! Creating the representation that is needed in the drinks industry. (📸 Kodak moment). Not only through the brands themselves, but the people behind them too. Kudos to Andrew Scutts for supporting us to bring this to life. Thanks to the team at Thin White Duke and Dav Eames for their mixology magic and creating some truly remarkable cocktails (I’m still not over the pickled pineapple garnish!). With most of us having worked in the UK drinks industry for a while, this sparked a great conversation about the lack of people of colour in the drinks industry, in our personal experience. Especially in hospitality, creative roles, and leading brands, and why that might be? It just so happens to be South Asian Heritage Month, I would love to connect with other South Asians working in the drinks industry to keep the conversation about representation alive. Blending Cultures: How a Dutch Birthday with Chinese Hot Pot Reveals the Art of Global Business Relations Last night's experience at Harry's Dutch birthday celebration, which included the rich tradition of Chinese hot pot, was a cultural fusion revelation. Set in the creative confines of PingHe's atelier, the event was more than just a culinary feast; it was also a masterclass in cross-cultural integration. Many of the Dutch guests had never had a shared and hearty Chinese hot pot experience before. Observing their inquiry and passion reminded me of the first steps many businesses take when venturing into unfamiliar markets. As a China business consultant, I've seen personally how businesses thrive when they embrace cultural diversity with open hearts and minds. The small kitchen space turned into a bustling hub of collaboration, where preparation for the hot pot mirrored the intricate dance of international business relations. Every ingredient, from tofu to thinly sliced meats and a variety of veggies 🥒 , required careful preparation, much like the thorough planning required for successful cross-border partnerships. Harry's leadership and Ping's support were critical, embodying the spirit of inclusive leadership that transcends cultural barriers. This event demonstrated how personal connections, such as those formed over shared meals, lay the framework for successful professional relationships. Bridging the gap between the West and East, I’ve realized that the essence of successful international business lies in understanding and respecting these cultural nuances. Just as we navigated the shared hot pot, explaining the etiquette and joy of this dining tradition, in business, we must guide and educate, fostering an environment of mutual respect and collaboration. The event was more than simply a birthday celebration; it was a microcosm of the global business scene, where many cultures come together to create a richer, more connected world. ⚡ Glenn Micallef (Malta), the youngest commissioner nominee, gets the EU portfolio for culture. What can we expect? To the extent it matters, the Labour Party, of which Micallef is a member, has developed an extensive national programme for culture. Some of its key focus areas include: ➡ Working conditions in the cultural sector: the upcoming launch of Malta’s Charter of the Status of the Artist, reducing income tax, and creating new spaces for artists (such as studios and rehearsal areas). ➡ Access to culture: developing public spaces, facilitating children’s access to cultural activities, promoting reading and modernising libraries, and introducing a Culture Pass for young people under the age of 25. ❗ Malta's current Cultural Policy, adopted under the Labour Government, is one of the few national cultural policy agendas in the EU that acknowledges the multifaceted role of culture in climate action, describes culture as a 'public good', and sets an ambitious vision for its role in well-being. 🤔 Culture is grouped with 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 within the same Commission portfolio.
