BetterUp offered free professional coaching to thousands of physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. I remember an emergency Sunday night executive team meeting in early April 2020, where our CEO announced the idea. I was leading sales then, and I asked, “What would you like to come from this initiative?” I thought that our founders would want some business development benefit. Also, as the head of the go-to-market function, this line of question was in my nature. When Alexi Robichaux proclaimed that the number one metric was ‘people under care,’ you could feel the gravity of the situation. We had a mission bigger than growing a start-up. We were here to help. That week in NYC, there were images of makeshift trucks serving as morgues in the streets, emergency tents in the parks, everything was shut down, the death toll was on the rise, and at 7PM every night, we cheered for front line workers out our windows. Helping senior nurses and allied health professionals, manage the challenges of working relationships, so they can reduce stress and anxiety in the workplace.
The healthcare environment is inherently collaborative. Yet it doesn’t always work like that or seem like the right option. Even experienced professionals like you face interpersonal challenges, and it’s normal to feel the frustrations that go with those situations. It may just be with one other person that you don’t see eye to eye with, but you know its affecting you. When another interaction takes place, you feel you are not being listened to, and your confidence takes a knock as a result. With all your years of experience you feel you should be able to resolve these issues, chastising yourself when you don’t know the answers. Perhaps you aren’t competent enough… Now think about the times when you are in your clinical role and you can’t quite get to the bottom of a patient’s symptoms. It’s a challenge, frustrating because you can’t find the answer. In all your years of experience you feel you should be able to resolve this. Your assessment and analytical skills are not revealing the problem. You know your limitations and you decide you need to look elsewhere and seek some help. You don’t think any lesser of yourself for it! If you compare the two examples, what do you notice? It’s a common misconception amongst senior nurses and AHP’s that your priorities should always be on patient care. Rather than looking after yourself and seeking out some help when you need it.
