Anyone want to watch a Malaysian film, for free, as your first film of the year?
Pendatang means immigrant in Malay and still used towards Chinese and Indian Malaysians. Yes, this film is about race. Specifically race in Malaysia - a multiracial country: with Malays, Chinese, Indians, Indigenous people (over 60 different groups) and people called "dan lain-lain" which means "and others" generally Eurasian, Serani, Portuguese... and others.
Malaysia is beautifully multiracial and multicultural - indeed we boast about it: "Malaysia, Truly Asia" is our tourism tagline - because where else would you get Malays, Chinese and Indians in one place?! Ok, Singapore, our little brother country that broke away.
But there is a racial tension and always have been. This film, Pendatang, intends to spark discussion. Set in an alternative dystopian reality - races are segregated, and we see a Chinese family reassigned a family home - moving into one which was clearly Malay - a traditional kampung house. What happened to the previous family, their furniture and photos still present? Races are forbidden to interact - jail of 20 years at least if you do. But... there is a young Malay girl hiding in the attic. What do the family do?
The film is in Cantonese, with a little Malay, and you can choose your subtitles.
The producers knew there was no way this film would get past the censors, so they crowdsourced (USD$70k) from the public to make it - and have released it on YouTube so we can all watch it. It was launched on 21st December 2023, and over 700k views on YouTube - definitely way more than a million people - as most of us watched it with others.
Content Warning: There are violent scenes, after the first half.

[tl;dr, do you know any companies that wanna do crossover and market their brand with LB while leveraging our foot traffic? Register your interest here: https://shorturl.at/cktD3 ]
As of now, we have 2 locations for Lorong Belakang, one in Cyberjaya and another is in Bukit Bintang. In a day, we can reach a minimum of 3000 visitors, and at our peak day (saturday) it doubled to around 6000 visitors. In terms of social media following, we have over 10,000 followers with each post reach more than 7000 accounts.
We are now looking for brands to leverage our presence. From promotion to total takeover, our aim is to push your brands and gain awareness across the greater Klang Valley.
We have pilot this initiative with many corporate brands from Media's (yeap, more than 1 media company), Education, Electric Car to Real Estate and now we think everyone should have a chance to do a crossover with us and gain attention.

People buy from people. Not the product or service.
Recent experience:
While returning Singapore from Malaysia, I realised I left my sunglasses in the rented car from a rental company in Johor Bahru (JB). Texted the owner (let's call her S), and thankfully, she told me it was still there.
Here was the conversation between S and I in Malay. I'll translate it for non-Malay speaking folks who might read this post:
S: Are these the ones? *sends a photo*
Me: Yes Alamak! (Singaporean slang for oops)
S: Hahaha I guess you're renting a car from us again?
Me: Hahaha sis, you're truly a salesperson. God willing, should I decide to head to Johor Bahru, I will rent a car again from you.
Yet another light hearted conversation worth a share. Sounds like I'll be back in JB to retrieve my sunglasses soon! 🚗

Thanks Sulis (Ketut Sulistyawati)for sharing this link. Since the important "Service Design on Stage" issue of Service Design Network's Touchpoint magazine back in 2012, more and more designers are using powerful, more inclusive, more direct, proven design methods taken from theater and other parts of showbusiness. We've even been pushing the envelope ourselves in our "Theatrical Methods for Design" at the Co-Creation School, our experimental space.
One slight disappointment here is the emphasis on idea generation. Ideas are the easy part of design, and while theater is useful here, it is way more useful in research, prototyping and implementation.
That point aside, this seems like a very interesting session! Take a look.
We're back!
SDID Meetup Vol. 6 Workshop: Theatrical Act in Service Design
Brought to you by Somia Customer Experience and DKATALIS
This time, we’ll bring a workshop led directly by the theatrical act experts from #JalanTeater, Zulfa Nasrulloh and Sahlan Mujtaba. It’s a unique opportunity to learn how to utilize theatrical acts as a method in service design practices, specifically in idea creation.
All participants will be set in a group which fosters exercises of collaborative working and builds engagement and new networks. If you’re new to this, worry not! The session will be opened with a talk about Theatrical Act!

Learning a new language, and following recipes... those are the kind of skills I expected Glance users to gain with their smart lock screens.
But learning to play the guitar and freestyle football? That’s beyond impressive! Great going, Rayhan.
