PARIS 2024 - OPENING CEREMONY: SMASHING SUCCESS OR CRUSHING FAILURE? As leaders, what lessons can we draw from the management of the opening ceremony for the 2024 Olympic Games? 👏 First of all, kudos to the organising teams for the creativity deployed in designing the ceremony. It was clearly off the beaten track (stadium). Of course, when you take risks, you're not immune to technical glitches, but you can't make omelettes without breaking eggs.  👏 Congratulations as well for the aesthetics of the whole, sublimating a magnificent natural setting.  👎But unfortunately, in my opinion, it was a failure in terms of communication and message. The event is supposed to be universal and defend Olympic values, including respect. This was far from the case.  😇 Among the billions of spectators, there are many religious beliefs and lifestyles. In many countries, the public display of intimate acts such as kissing, for example, is considered indecent. Blasphemy is also intolerable for many believers. And yet, what have we witnessed?  🥳 A show that mixed Olympic elements - very good - with aspects of French culture sometimes bordering on Emily in Paris type of cliché - why not - but also a parade combining gay pride, wokeism and blasphemy. I'm not judging these choices as such, but the mismatch between audience, moment and message.  🤮 You only have to look at the outpouring of criticism in the foreign press and on YouTube to realise the extent of the mismatch. And the words are not kind. Why impose a kiss between men, drag queens and bearded women, a child partying with all this fabulous company, to a multiple audience that absolutely does not share this model of values.  👉 Once again, my aim is not to judge this or that lifestyle. I'm not criticising the substance. But the context. This show wasn't meant to be foisted on billions of viewers and their children, and those responsible for the event failed to exercise discernment. It could be argued that the show was about inclusion. But is excluding majorities the best way to promote inclusion?  🗣️ In leadership, we learn a basic rule of communication. Before you communicate, you need to ask yourself two questions: 1- Who is my audience? 2- What reaction do I want to trigger? Clearly, these questions haven't been asked. Or we've deliberately chosen to ignore the answers.  Food for thought for all of us.

Episode 4- beyond CIIE The CIIE has ended on Friday, but my meetings and discussions just started. I want to share with you a little story. The founder of a company in Shanghai missed the deadline to get the CIIE ticket, he then tried to reach me through several other exhibitor companies, they’ve been doing home rehabilitation for COPD since 2018 but had to stop during the 3 years pandemic because their service is in person. When he told me the story of how he reached out to me, his struggle and persistence during the past 3 years, it almost brought me to tears. We encouraged each other to hang in there just a little bit longer now that we found each other and the partnership will make both of us ten folds stronger. And always come back to why we are doing this, ie , to serve the 100million (even more) COPD population in China. P.s., His mom died from COPD. If I had to pick one single highlight of my first time CIIE experience, this is it! Everything is worth it! All the struggle, anxiety, frustration, unsleeping nights is NOTHING in front of this. I think this is the meaning of an expo like CIIE. Thank you 廖媛（China Cecilia） for the interview. Assumptions challenged. In the most boldest of ways. I found the boldness and sheer artistry of the Paris Olympic Opening Games…breathtaking. Creative Director Thomas Jolly, an award winning French theatre artist (who was bullied as a child and found solace in drama and theatre) directed the event which has been noted as the most complex and ambitious opening ceremony of all time. I was struck by how many assumptions were challenged. The ceremony must be in a stadium? Think again. The athletes parade the stadium on foot? Think again. I learned the transfer of how artists think - to the business world from Tina Seelig. Seelig proposes that challenging assumptions helps you move past the first and second wave ideas to move towards breakthrough thinking. Just like an artist an innovative thinker asks “Does it have to be this way?” “What if?” And of course - “Why?” By challenging assumptions, it’s possible to break free from how things have always been done and re-imagine a different way but having purpose and meaning as the driving forces. Of course for many it’s “not the same” having the ceremony housed outside a stadium. But that was the point after all. #challengeassumptions #breakthroughthinking
