Join our roundtable at #ClimateWeekNYC to discuss how to bring equity in global mineral supply chains. 🗓️Monday 23rd 3:15pm 📍White Space Chelsea, 530 W 25th St Register here👉https://lnkd.in/dXgfnzFm There is a fierce scramble underway for the minerals which will build the cleaner energy systems and technology of the future. Many low-income countries that host these minerals export them in raw form, missing the opportunity to add greater value to their economies. Higher income countries are jostling to secure more minerals to profit from the energy transition and build their cleaner energy systems. Stick around after for a Global Witness panel discussion and a drinks reception with Global Witness and SOMO. This roundtable organised by SOMO Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association ZELA and PWYP will explore solutions to these pressing challenges by: → focusing on promoting local value addition and equitable economic participation for resource-rich countries → encouraging responsible resource use by wealthy nations that prioritise environmental and social well-being, and → addressing trade barriers between producer and consumer countries that reinforce inequities in global mineral supply chains. With Dr Ketakandriana Rafitoson, PhD, Executive Director of PWYP Mutuso Dhliwayo, Executive Director of ZELA Alejandro Gonzalez, Senior Researcher at SOMO

🌍 Join us at #ClimateWeekNYC for a Roundtable Discussion on Equity and Responsible Resource Use in Global Mineral Supply Chains 🌍 🗓️ Monday, September 23rd, 3:15 PM 📍 White Space Chelsea, 530 W 25th St 👉 Register here: https://lnkd.in/dXgfnzFm Demand for critical minerals is surging, but this scramble often reinforces an unjust economic model that benefits wealthier nations while marginalizing resource-rich, low-income countries, particularly in the Global South. These nations are reduced to raw material suppliers, missing opportunities to add value locally, while also struggling to balance global mineral demand with their own development and energy needs. This roundtable, organised by SOMO Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (ZELA) and Publish What You Pay will explore solutions to these pressing challenges by: → focusing on promoting local value addition and equitable economic participation for resource-rich countries → encouraging responsible resource use by wealthy nations that prioritise environmental and social well-being, and → addressing trade barriers between producer and consumer countries that reinforce inequities in global mineral supply chains. With Ketakandriana Rafitoson, PhD, Executive Director of PWYP Mutuso Dhliwayo, Executive Director of ZELA Alejandro Gonzalez, Senior Researcher at SOMO Stick around for a panel by Global Witness on Preventing Conflict and Protecting Rights in the Renewable Energy Boom and a joint reception by SOMO and Global Witness https://lnkd.in/geqs5z_y #ClimateAction #mining #NYCClimateWeek #ClimateJustice #Justtransition

It has been a great honor to participate in the “Empowering Change: Greece's Journey Towards a Sustainable Energy Landscape” panel, moderated by @Patti Domm, FWA Board Member and Emmy award-winning financial journalist, at the @Financial Women's Association International Business Conference held in Athens. During the discussion with esteemed fellow speakers, I highlighted the pivotal role that critical #rawmaterials play not only in national security and economic growth, but also in #Europe’s climate goals, strategic autonomy and #greentransition. In this direction, Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), the flagship legislative initiative to ensure EU’s secure and sustainable supply of #criticalrawmaterials, creates a remarkable opportunity for #Greece, one of the most well-endowed mineral European countries, to exploit its mineral wealth in a #sustainable way. In fact, more than 15 mineral raw materials included in the list of strategic and critical mineral raw materials, have been traced in Greek territory, while our #copper and #gold porphyry deposit at the transformational #Skouries project on the Halkidiki Peninsula in Northern Greece, will play a game – changing role for our country, upon commencement of commercial production in Q3 2025. #HellasGold #ResponsibleMining #FWAIBC2024 #FWAIBCGreece

🌍 Upcoming Event | China’s Critical Mineral Investments in Africa Time: October 31, 2023, 9:30am-11:00am ET Location: 6th Floor Flom Auditorium, Woodrow Wilson Center and Online The urgency of the climate crisis has accelerated the global demand for minerals to fuel the clean energy transition in renewables, electric vehicles and more. This push has put China’s involvement in critical mineral mining and refining in the Global South, especially on the African continent, in the spotlight. Globally, China controls 85-95% of this important mineral supply chain. From the colonial period to today, extractive mineral industries in African countries, like the DRC, South Africa and Zimbabwe, have exacted a high price on local communities in places where social and environmental safeguards are lacking or not enforced. The newly formed Critical Minerals Accountability Alliance is a network of advocates and NGOs united around a mission to design and advance advocacy tactics throughout the critical minerals supply chain on the African continent. Their work will range from documentation of environmental and human rights harms to strategic litigation, rulemaking, and capacity building. This Wilson Center panel will feature JingJing Zhang (Center for Transnational Environmental Accountability); Claude Kabemba (SOUTHERN AFRICA RESOURCE WATCH); Emmanuel Umpula Nkumba (African Resources Watch AFREWATCH); and Mutuso Dhliwayo, (Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association). Panelists will highlight stories on the impacts of Chinese overseas investment in the critical minerals sector in Africa. They also will discuss potential strategies to ensure the protection of the affected communities and ecosystems. Wilson Center China Environment Forum (CEF) is co-hosting this event with Wilson Center Environmental Change and Security Program and Wilson Center Africa Program. It was a pleasure as an agrochemical expert to conduct this preliminary assessment at the site of a perfusion production plant in Bunia, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. this mission allowed me to identify the environmental and social impacts associated with this project. as well as to collect data that will be usually for the development of the environmental and social impact study report for this project.

💥💚Youth-NREG Indaba Series with Chi:💚💥 According to reports, Africa has significant natural resource wealth including diamonds, sugar, salt, gold, iron, cobalt, uranium, copper, bauxite, silver, petroleum, natural gas, timber and cocoa beans. The continent holds more than half of the world’s rare minerals and is rich in both renewable and non-renewable natural resources. In addition, about 30% of all global mineral reserves are found in Africa. Proceeds or earnings from these resources play a very significant role in financing development in Africa and other economies. In other words, Africa’s pathway to promoting its economic growth and transformative development are hinged on the effective and efficient management of its natural resources. As part of promoting active youth inclusion in the governance of the Natural Resources & Environmental (NRE) sector, the Strategic Youth Network for Development : SYND GHANA (SYND) established the Youth in Natural Resources and Environmental Governance (Youth-NREG) Platform in May 2019 through the support of the The World Bank Ghana Office and UNDP Ghana. The platform has since made significant progress in amplifying the voices of young Ghanaian environmentalists in the sector, which led to organising a National Youth Conference on Natural Resources & Environment Governance in April 2023 through the support of Ford Foundation. To elevate the conversation to the continental level, the African Youth Conference on Natural Resources and Environmental Governance was successfully organised in May 2024, which saw the participation of young people from other African countries. Given the interest levels of participants from other countries, SYND is launching the “The Youth-NREG Indaba Series with Chi” to among others: - Share 🇬🇭Ghana’s lessons and experiences as a guide for members in other African countries. - Co-create youth-led solutions in the management of the NRE sector within the continent. - Identify entry points for effective members participation in their respective countries. - Document and amplify the contribution of young people as relevant actors in governing the natural resources. #TheAfricaWeWant #YouthLedSolutions #WeAreShifting
