I haven’t posted recently about my day job, so here’s an update!! Yesterday we officially opened the 3rd brick and mortar location! Crazy right? In ONE year we have opened three completely new stores starting from less than nothing to be fully built, stocked, merchandised, staffed, and operating. This experience has been somewhat of a challenge, yet in my opinion has also been a fairly easy achievement. And no, it hasn’t been easy in the sense that it’s easy work or a simple feat to undertake. You see, it’s all about how you approach things. If you approach things with the confidence that you can accomplish any task necessary, you and your staff will not only be more effective at doing so, but it will be more fulfilling as well.

One of our dedicated Baristas in our Pyrmont Support Centre ☕ We sat down with Caleb to talk about his career journey and why he loves working at Hanes: Q: How did you get your job at Hanes?  A: AimBig Employment helped me on my job search. I've had two other barista roles previously before getting my current role at Hanes. Q: How did you find the recruitment and onboarding process? A: Everyone was really helpful, I transitioned into the role very easily and felt very welcome. I was given a tour of the office and got to help figure out a good spot for the coffee machine with the support of my job coach. Overall the process was quick and easy which I really liked. Q: What's your favourite part about your role and working at Hanes? A: Getting to meet and talk to lots of new people all the time. I like making coffees for the friends I've made and get to hear about their day-to-day. I've also enjoyed having the chance to set up systems and routines that work for me in my role, I feel like my own boss a little bit! Q: Do you have any advice for anyone with a disability who's starting a new job? A: Be happy and open to feedback, I always ask if anything I'm doing can be improved so I can do the best job possible. #beingoodcompany #goodpeople #goodimpact #goodcareers

A day in the life of Retail. When I was in corporate and had a job interview, I always got the same question about my resume: “You managed Eddiebauer stores? What was that like?” People are fascinated if you have management experience at a storied and cherished brand. Working at Brooks Brothers as an Assistant Store Manager is no different. Actually, running a store is a lot like running a business. Because it IS a business that someone has entrusted to you to run. Retail is a great training/proving ground for building a knowledge and experience base in sales, project management, relationship building, hiring, human resources, merchandising, inventory control…the list is endless. What I love best about running a store, is the opportunity to leave my footprint on a business with my creativity and sales performance. When I say I worked for 25 years at Publix, people often look at me funny. I can see the calculator in their brain trying to figure out how old I am and how I could already have 25 years with a company. It’s not hard when you start at 16. Publix’s current CEO did the same. So did the previous one. It’s so commonplace at Publix that no one really bats an eye at associates with 25 or 30 or even 40 years of service. This is because Publix promotes from within. To become a stock clerk, I had to start as a bagger. To become an assistant grocery manager, I had to have experience in multiple grocery sub-departments. Many corporate openings are only visible to current Publix associates. What impact does this have on Publix? Culture is an important element, especially in customer-facing roles and the best way to maintain culture is promote from within. I learned about that culture early in my career and carried that with me throughout my time there. I don’t believe there is a more effective way to build a strong culture. However, I can see the downsides to exclusively promoting from within. A company’s growth is limited by the current talent pool. New ideas and perspectives are infrequent. Groupthink is common and appetite for change is muted. It has worked for Publix and they continue to find enough internal candidates to open 40+ stores per year. Can honestly say this is the longest period of time I have gone without having a AP / LP position. I'm told my resume is impressive along with my results with previous companies. With that said I keep losing positions to other candidates that don't have the proven record that I have. I can only assume why but this isn't the place to list those rants. So here is a question. What other positions have any of you transitioned into outside of AP / LP? So far I have applied to store manager, OPs manager, inventory control and assistant manager positions without an interview. Has retail changed that much or are they moving on from the old dogs for new tricks. Great company and opportunity

"No experience necessary" why do companies say this when they post in Indeed. I need a company to give me a chance. I am a responsible and trustworthy person who applies to everything I see on line that states "no experience needed". What more can I do? I need a company who lives by their Inclusion and Diversity statements. Just saying you are willing to accept applicants with a disability and actually giving someone a chance is two different things. I have Asperger Syndrome, I am more than willing to complete the tasks outlined in the job descriptions but I get zero response, Why. Loblaw Companies Limited McDonald's Walmart Canadian Tire Subway Dennigers...can someone explain what more I can do to obtain employment. I want to work, just need someone to give me a chance to prove myself.
