This week we are starting new series on the future of Europe as elections approach, focusing first on the EU’s economy, single market, trade position and budget. Future of Europe: The EU is at a crossroads on economy, environment, immigration and defence.

Last week JEF Europe joined an insightful discussion with Philip Drauz, Secretary General of Renew Europe, in the context of the series of events co-organized in collaboration with Forefront Advisers and DeHavilland EU. Our #dialogue explored the future trajectory of #RenewEurope, including the role of party manifestos in setting the agenda for the next #EuropeanParliament, the dynamics surrounding the election of #Spitzenkandidaten, the strategic composition of the Renew Europe Group in the upcoming Parliament, and the process of creating new coalitions to elect the #CommissionPresident. 🇧🇪🇪🇺 The Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU 2024 is coming to an end. We have worked to drive forward the legislative work. #EU2024BE

As the calendar year draws to a close, Spain will hand over the rotating presidency of the Council of the #EU on 1 January 2024 to Belgium which holds the post until 30 June ahead of the planned handover to Hungary on 1 July. 2024 will be a pivotal year for the EU with the 10th European Parliament elections as well as Belgian federal elections on 9 June. The Belgian Presidency's Programme (14th time it holds this post) focuses on completing the remaining open legislative files of the outgoing European co-legislators while balancing the regional interests influential on Belgian federal politics. The outgoing Spanish Presidency, itself having navigated a tumultuous outcome of domestic elections during its tenure, managed to close 71 negotiations on the ca. 120 legislative files between the EU's three key institutions, including several in the past few weeks. These include the world’s first binding regulations for artificial intelligence, negotiated over an intense 36-hour session; reform of the EU's fiscal rules, which looked shaky until the last minute; plus a deal overhauling the EU’s migration rules which have been years in the making. While on-going implementation of the EU's Green Deal, Digital Strategy, Banking Union and the Capital Markets Union all remain a key priority for the Single Market for financial services over the next six months, the recent passing (RIP) of both Jacques Delors and Wolfgang Schäuble in late December leave very big shoes to fill as the EU continues the integration of the Single Market for financial services and the wider real economy. What’s next for #Europe following the 6-9 June #EUelections2024 to the European Parliament? Parties on the right gained seats. But a broad right-wing consensus seems implausible. Another agreement, rather, among Europe’s centre-right, centre-left and liberal parties is likely to guide a next European Commission programme focused on #security and #growth: including stronger joint defence and a deeper Single Market featuring less red tape and more investment in R&D, with uncertain prospects for key Green-Deal goals. And yet support at the margins — to either left or right of the spectrum, and implicating both national governments and political parties — will almost certainly also be needed to get anything done. Beyond the crucial talks underway now in the European Council and @EuropeanParliament, this basic dynamic seems likely to recur throughout the coming five-year mandate, each new controversial file after another. A large scale attitudes survey across a core set of European nations found significant pessimism towards the Eurozone’s economic prospects. The survey, conducted for major insurer Allianz, also found major fractures in public attitudes towards the benefits or disadvantages of EU membership. Austrians were generally in favour of EU membership with a net positive rating but French and Germans in particular were significantly negative about the benefits their respective countries gained from the EU. More Europeans want the EU to be an independent third pole, compared to lining up with either the U.S. or China. #fragmentedEU

It was a real pleasure to have hosted Sir Michael Leigh at the Press Club Brussels as EU elections got underway. Our conversation, Sir Michael’s insights and ensuing discussions with a super engaged audience continued well after the session ‘officially’ ended - throwing light on several aspects of the EU project and perceptions about the bloc - including its soft power and moral standing in the world. Today we woke up to the reality of the array of internal forces which will shape the future direction of the bloc and its agenda. While the center has held - those on the right and far right - have made significant gains - while the Greens and liberals have lost important shares. Are we on the cusp of a pro EU-farmer, pro-car industry, diminished New Green Deal agenda, and an even less migration friendly and altogether more nationalistic Europe? Time will tell - but the trends which these results suggest cannot be ignored . The western led liberal world order and its principles seem to be threatened - not only abroad - but increasingly- also at home.
