Climate Action is indeed a sports team and the Global North is the quarterback while the Global South is the receiver… Both players play complimentary roles that are critical to initiate and execute climate projects. Both have to communicate, collaborate and learn from each others to iterate. Climate is a new sector with huge implications on our future: while in its infancy stages, it is an ecosystem in maturation where stakeholders are scrambling to find their bearings. It will take a global effort that will have to leverage every ounce of energy, innovation and participation from all countries in all continents to really move the needle.

The massive carbon footprint of events, stadiums, and fan travel is something we can’t ignore anymore. I’ve just shared a new blog about the sports industry's environmental challenges and what we can do to tackle them. We look at the Paris 2024 Olympics, UEFA Euro 2024, and other events that have taken steps to reduce their emissions. But we need more. It’s time to: - Protect wildlife and focus on conservation. - Push our leaders for stricter environmental laws—clean air, clean water, and healthier food are our rights. - Make every stadium and event sustainable. Sports are incredible. They bring us together, make us cheer, and give us memorable moments. But there's a side we need to talk about—the environmental cost of sports. The sports industry is worth $550 to $600 billion annually, and a huge carbon footprint comes with that scale. Sports contribute millions of tons of greenhouse gases yearly, from massive stadiums to global events. Travel, stadium construction, event operations—it all adds up. But we can change that. Some events are already setting an example: Paris 2024 Olympics is focused on cutting emissions by using existing venues and powering them with renewable energy. Tokyo 2020 reduced its emissions thanks to the lack of spectators, highlighting how impactful fan travel can be. UEFA Euro 2024 plans to offer free public transportation to help reduce emissions from fan travel. It's not just about carbon. As Robert F. Kennedy Jr. points out, focusing only on carbon numbers risks missing the actual value of nature—our connection to the environment that goes beyond metrics. Imagine if every league and every team committed to sustainability. Sports have the power to influence millions, and the ripple effect would be huge if our favorite teams and athletes took action.
