Info
Sports for Nature aims to mainstream nature-positive action across sports by 2030. The Sports for Nature Framework was created to tap into sports’ enormous potential to take on ambitious goals and drive positive change. The Framework aims to deliver transformative, nature positive action across sports by 2030 and beyond, enabling sports to champion nature and contribute to its protection and restoration. The Framework calls on sports organisations to make measurable contributions to nature and asks them to work towards four principles and linked goals that will help them advance their nature journey. The Framework was developed as a collaborative effort between the following organisations: International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in collaboration with the Sails of Change Foundation.

Congrats to the winners and all nominees who are taking action for our planet 🌏 #sustainablesport #sports4nature
The winners of the IOC Climate Action Awards 2024 have been announced during Climate Week NYC: 🟢 in the athlete category: Imogen Grant (rowing, Great Britain) who was instrumental in the launch of the Clean Water Sport Alliance to improve river health and water quality and Lina Taylor, OLY (beach volleyball, Bulgaria) is using her background as a scientist, Olympian and coach to help address climate change. 🟢 in the NOC category: Swiss Olympic who reduced its 2023 greenhouse gas emissions by 66 per cent compared to 2022, largely due to the fact that it chose train over plane for Games-related travel in Europe. 🟢 in the IF category: the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has reduced water usage by an estimated 60 per cent since 2012 through the development of innovative “Dry Turf” technology, which reduces the amount of water needed for elite hockey pitches. 👏 In addition to the four winners, the Mauritius Olympic Committee and the International Biathlon Union have been recognised in the “Highly Commended” category for the innovative nature of their efforts to reduce emissions. 💡 Supported by Worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Partner Deloitte , the IOC Climate Action Awards reward innovative projects from National Olympic Committees, International Federations and athletes that are aimed at reducing the environmental impact of sport while inspiring the wider Olympic Movement to take action. 👉 More information here: https://lnkd.in/eszQBZ36 #Olympics #sustainability #IOCClimateActionAwards #climateaction

As the #Paris2024 #Paralympics come to a close, we reflect not only on the remarkable performances we’ve witnessed but also on the urgent need for sports organizations to leverage their platforms to address the triple planetary crisis. During our #Sports4Nature ”Stronger Together” event this summer, Adam von Koeverden, #Olympic kayaker and Parliamentary Secretary to Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, shared an important insight: "I believe in sports' ability to change hearts and minds. Research shows that when athletes speak out, people listen more than to politicians, experts, or academics. Sports organizations must recognize this and use their platforms to inspire meaningful action." Adam highlighted the growing recognition that events of this scale don’t have to come at the cost of the planet: "Through your actions, we are recognizing that the climate and environmental impact of a big Games like this doesn’t have to be as bad as we once thought—that’s really moving the needle." We're proud to have a great partner the International Olympic Committee – IOC, who not only supports the #Sports4Nature Initiative, but history of engaging on initiatives to take action for nature and biodiversity.
How can we minimise the environmental impact of the Olympic Games? They require a substantial logistical undertaking, with the host country preparing for years to welcome more than 11,000 athletes and hundreds of thousands of spectators. Sustainability and conserving nature are now central components in the planning of the Olympic Games, based in large part on the International Olympic Committee's new strategic roadmap, longstanding partnerships with organisations like IUCN, and new initiatives like Sports for Nature. In our new blog, Marie Sallois from the International Olympic Committee – IOC talks about sports and #nature. https://bit.ly/3zdpoNi #Paris2024
