British political leaders no longer want to talk about European integration because they have forgotten about its connection to the idealism of the 1960s, writes John S. F. Wright. Harold Macmillan and Ted Heath knew how to talk about Europe. Conceiving that membership of the European community was “a new frontier” for Britain, they connected the country with the idealism of their era, visible in contemporary TV shows like Star Trek. When figures like Macmillan and Heath spoke about their new European enterprise, they didn’t speak to material notions. They spoke about a transformation of British society. They spoke about visions of a new cooperative European future in which the continent’s diverse elements came together under a common aim. This was to be a new kind of world in which the old rivalries and hatreds yielded to ideas about building a future that was better than the past. Gene Roddenberry, the writer and creator of Star Trek, attributed his show's success to an enormous hunger for unity and togetherness among the public. He reasoned that the much-maligned common man and woman was ready for the 23rd century today, and that they were light years ahead of their visionless leaders. These are principles that today's British leaders would do well to take on board as the country charts its future relationship with Europe. https://lnkd.in/gc_sYMKf #StarTrek #Brexit

We dare to differ Talking about our party, representing the non-(nature) and under (the young) represented, we of course presume that all young people are as excited about this as we are. And there we see that with some young it is the same as with some old: "You do not have experience. How do you know how politics works?" Well if everyone could only start once they have the experience, we would all be jobless!! We do not believe in doing politics the OLD way, we believe in doing it the NEW way. And nobody has experience in that. We do have a lot of experienced support, so for everybody who worries about us, the young with our puppy fur still visible, don't worry. We've got this. New ideas with good old-fashioned support. Looking at the Netherlands, we see a lot of suddenly big new parties with very inexperienced people not able to build a new government. So agreed, you need a certain level of experience (we've got this). Looking at Germany we see an overly experienced government with people who have been in politics their whole life, so called 'professional politicians', and the gap with the real society doesn't work. The too long in politics show. So there we have a point (we've got this). We stand for REAL representation. And giving everybody, most notably us, the young and everything the chance to be represented. We believe one learns by doing and learning from the best (we've got this). And we believe in optimism and new starts. (which is more than can be said about a lot of people with a long track record in politics....) JOIN US, MAKE A DIFFERENCE, DARE TO DIFFER AND BE DIFFERENT. We wish all our American friends and colleagues a Happy Independence Day / #July4th The American Revolution stands out from all the others as one of the greatest events in history - liberating a new nation but a liberation based on principles of individual liberty, respect for tradition and economic rights and without the carnage of other less fortunate revolutions. In the year 1776 that revolution lit a torch that still inspires today. And if American democracy is going through its own trials at the moment its institutions will, as 54th Speaker and Irish American Paul Ryan predicted, win through. Speaker Ryan was addressing his remarks to the American European Community Association 40th anniversary in Brussels on 17th June last, an event which we were proud to support. His neutrality in the coming November Presidential election - plus the fact that he is a quarter century younger than the two main competitors in that election - makes his a vital voice for the future. As you can see from the image below, our consultancy has kept our client base abreast of key trends public affairs trends in the US as in the EU and Ireland. Aside from the fact that some 70 million Americans can trace ancestry back to Ireland, Ireland's strong relationship with the US economy - some 378,000 jobs are directly or indirectly dependent on US multinationals who export almost one third €63.1 billion) of our experts and account for almost a half a trillion euro (€492.5 billion) in investments here - warrants the closest possible attention to US affairs. And where almost all commentators have emphasised links with only the Democratic party, we have - whilst celebrating Joe Biden's great relationship with Ireland - also consistently bet on the need to maintain links with the moderate wings of both the Democrat party and Republican party - we need to be able to talk to whomever emerges in power after November across a range of issues from Trade, to Investment, Climate Action and Global Security. The rising likelihood of the Republicans winning the White House, Senate and Congress over the next two years means that our approach is the safest and best when it comes to defending Ireland's interests and maintaining the precious Irish-American relationship. #July4th #IndependenceDay #Biden #Trump #USelection #IDA #EUUSTrade
