Reinventing the supply chain one step at a time. We are truly honoured to have been mentioned in Sophie Benson's Vogue Business article "Are microfactories the answer to making fashion on demand?" #supplychain #fashionondemand #fashionindustry
It's always daunting when we take a different path and move away from tried and true practices. This is true whether it's something as mundane as trying a new cuisine or something way bigger, like reinventing a supply chain. I've been in the fashion industry for most of my career, and I know that supply chain innovation doesn't happen overnight. But sometimes you have to bite the bullet, and we are at the point in our history where we have no choice. The key to effective change is to identify and utilize available resources, or build new ones. In our case, with a mandate to make "exactly what people want and not a single garment more", it's all about crafting strategic partnerships with "micro factories". Micro - not in terms of capacity, but rather the ability to service micro orders at speed. But for micro factories to thrive and scale, they need technology to automate as much as possible without sacrificing quality and efficiency. Thanks Sophie Benson and Vogue Business for mentioning Knitup. We are honoured to serve the industry with a tech-enabled supply chain in this revolutionary era. Steele Media Group, LLC (d/b/a eTextileCommunications.com - The Voice of the U.S. Textile Industry) and Secretary / Treasurer of the Southern Textile Association (Proud NC State grad)
Danaé Robert, senior associate at One Ventures, Santa Barbara, Calif., discusses the fashion industry’s need of large-scale innovation at today’s IMI & Alchemie Technology Ltd Digital Textile Manufacturing Technologies Conference at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton SouthPark in #Charlotte, N.C. She noted that there is no shortage of innovative ideas around sustainability and circularity, but many fail to achieve success, referring to a “Valley of Death” that represents the challenging divide between innovation and adoption. The conference is designed to inform and educate textile manufacturers, brand owners and others on the importance of innovative technologies within the dyeing, finishing and printing sectors and transform the textile/apparel industries' sustainability. eTextileCommunications.com and the Southern Textile Association are partners of this inaugural event. #ILoveThisIndustry #AmericanTextiles #WeMakeAmazing #Yarns #Fibers #Fabric #Fashion #Knitting #Weaving #Nonwovens #Apparel #Sustainability #Sourcing #SupplyChain #CutAndSew #Textiles #FashionDesign #TechnicalFabrics #IndustrialFabrics #Digitalization #DigitalTextiles #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #Automation #Workforce #Circularity

According to Vogue Business, some next-gen material startups are limiting their reliance on fashion brands and looking for partners in other industries to find the scale / speed of adoption they need to succeed. This hasn’t been exactly our experience -- Sero™ natural performance fibre is not a typical next-gen material, and our journey to commercialization has largely side-stepped the fashion industry’s risk aversion. As a result, our regenerative materials are commercially available TODAY and we can quickly scale up production to support game-changers in a wide variety of industries. The flexibility of our materials, which are fit for purpose for categories and applications ranging from period and personal care to bedding, furnishings and apparel, means we do not have to deprioritize fashion. Instead, we are perfectly positioned to collaborate with sustainable fashion brands looking to develop products that restore the environment from the soil up. Still, we love seeing next-gen materials gaining visibility via applications such as the iconic Herman Miller lounger or the integration done by BMW Group and JLR. Initiatives such as these help give the overall topic more visibility and momentum, which ultimately benefits all material innovation providers! Which segments do you see as having the greatest potential for regenerative materials? #regeneration #hemp #fiber #textileindustry #circulareconomy #circularfashion #nextgen

ARE MICROFACTORIES THE ANSWER TO MAKING FASHION ON DEMAND? Vogue Business: Are microfactories the answer to making fashion on demand? Small, highly automated and connected microfactories could help shrink fashion’s production impact. Now, startups are exploring how tech could help to overcome the model’s limitations. 🌽 How can we move from a design-make-sell model in fashion, to design-sell-make? Danish supply chain startup Rodinia Generation thinks it has the answer. The company has raised €3 million to fund the creation of a global network of ‘microfactories’ — starting in Europe then expanding to the US — that will provide fast, nearshore, low-impact production, turning fashion’s current bloated production model on its head. 🌮 Rodinia is not the only one exploring the potential of microfactories, which it defines as having a small floor space, a water-free process, a ‘brain’ (the software to run the operation) and automated data harvesting. Others include Teemill Tech Ltd, unspun™, SON Supply and Fashion-Enter Ltd/ FashionCapital, while tech companies such as GERBER and Kornit Digital are packaging the concept up as a product. What Rodinia hopes to do, with the new funding, is scale the model. Depending on the product categories in production, Rodinia’s microfactory can operate at a capacity of approximately 700,000 to 1 million garments per year. As the figures highlighted via The Or Foundation’s ‘Speak Volumes’ campaign demonstrate, this is more than enough to cover the needs of smaller brands yet represents a drop in the ocean when it comes to the production volumes of larger brands. 🥒 Trine Y., CEO of Rodinia Generation, though confident in the potential of microfactories to “make exactly what people want and not a single garment more”, concurs that microfactories are not the sole solution. Rather she hopes to forge partnerships along the way to push industry-wide change. “These are all pieces of the supply chain puzzle, and Rodinia is just a part of it,” she says. 🍄 learn more: https://lnkd.in/d_PJDexS #ai #metaverse #fashion #investments

Unspun—founded in 2015 by Stanford alums Beth Esponnette, Walden Lam, and Kevin Martin—wants to transform the system. It has developed technology that allows brands to set up machines in existing factories that will weave yarns into garments within minutes. The founders’ broader vision is to encourage companies to invest in domestic manufacturing, so they can make products closer to their customer. This will allow them to be more agile, deciding what styles to make just weeks, or months, in advance. This, the founders believe, will radically decrease overproduction, slashing global carbon emissions by 1%. #fabrics #fabric #manufacturing #industry #tech #design #innovation #textile #factories #technology #brands #sustainability

We were happy to have Prof. Valérie Moatti at our recent Plug and Play Tech Center webinar "On-demand Production in Fashion" In her recent The Conversation France article she questioned "Is the fashion world doomed to waste and overproduction?" The answer is On-demand #manufacturing. Unlike traditional mass-production methods, on-demand manufacturing tailors production to actual demand, eliminating #excess inventory and #waste. During the webinar, innovative startups showcased disruptive solutions reshaping fashion production: 🔹 unspun™: pioneers micro-batch production with 3D weaving technology. 🔹 silana: introduces robotics to automate garment sewing, reducing reliance on manual labor. 🔹 Pattern Project: utilizes AI-powered software for agile and responsive micro-batch manufacturing. Let's embrace these innovations for a greener future! 🌿 👇Click below to read the full The Conversation France article by Valérie Moatti https://lnkd.in/eSxfPqeA Zoë Chrysostom Yoobin Jung Shruti Grover Michael Hofmannrichter Jess Zhu Patricia Ahufinger Yassin Shaker #OnDemandManufacturing #Sustainability Plug and Play Sustainability

Is the rise of microfactories the future of sustainability in the fashion industry? In an article with Vogue Business, Quantis Fashion + Sporting Goods Lead Philipp Meister highlights an opportunity to collaborate with microfactories and material innovation companies to increase agility, efficiency and sustainability through micro-supply chains. 💬 "Lots of those innovators are still in the incubation phase. And that's an interesting phase to then collaborate with microfactories, because they don't need to set up large-scale material production."
