Australia makes a move - Fascinating step forward in the world of Quantum Computing (QC)! QC is something that I have yet to understand but certainly fascinates me. When will we get to Y2Q and is the size of the prize when we get to the end of the journey change our lives for ever? The whole potential for QC to pivot our approach to authentication is certainly not lost on me hence the need for anyone in the world of Economic Crime Prevention to remain close to developments. So what's happening in Australia? The Australian government has announced it will invest nearly A$1 billion into the development of quantum computers in partnership with PsiQuantum, which is headquartered in the US but was co-founded by a team including two Australian researchers. In return for the investment, the company will build and operate successive generations of its quantum computers in Brisbane, Australia. It's been met with scepticism from some on the use of the money and if this is a wize investment. After initially fearing that PsiQuantum’s claims were “dodgy” back in 2022 – the Australian government had been convinced following a two-year assessment. Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick likened the ambition of the state’s investment in QC to the Apollo space mission. “For Queensland, this is our moonshot ... our Project Apollo,” he said. “Just as project Apollo impacted space travel and all the scientific and technological advancements that came from that … so, too, quantum computing [will] have a transformational impact on information technology.” That's a pretty big claim but he could well be right! The Chicago Quantum Exchange and The Bloch Quantum Tech Hub are discussed in a new The Wall Street Journal article titled, "Colorado and Illinois Set Their Sights on Becoming the Nation’s Quantum Hub". The Bloch Quantum Tech Hub, which is projected to create 30,000 new #quantum jobs, train 50,000 people, and generate $60 billion in economic impact, is competing for $70 million in funding under the new U.S. Economic Development Administration Tech Hubs program. This program aims at creating jobs, spurring inclusive economic growth, and ensuring advances essential to US economic and national security. The region plans to use the funding, "to build an innovation-focused quantum lab for startups and also create a multistate community college-based quantum program," and the state of Illinois has supported The Bloch and has budgeted "$500 million for quantum endeavors for the coming fiscal year including a $200 million match for any tech hub funds it might get from the federal government." "Chicago was an early investor in quantum technology and is uniquely poised to have one of the nation’s largest quantum economies in the future," said David Awschalom, director of the Chicago Quantum Exchange and a professor at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago.
