I listened to Adam Robinson's podcast with Chili Piper's co-founder, Alina Vandenberghe, last week, and a few thoughts stuck with me until this week.
Even though the podcast's premise is about what Alina would be doing if Chili Piper was a $1 million ARR startup, the last 10 minutes of the podcast had me listening to the podcast on repeat, which discussed how Alina and her team are thinking about building their team's culture. It made me reflect on what we're doing at ClearCalcs to build a co-creating culture for the team.
Here's the rundown:
"I cannot be effective as a one person. As a CEO, I can only be as effective as my team."
+ Alina emphasized that she doesn't make decisions alone but participates in collaborative decision-making processes with her team.
I've been accelerating my learning and practice for effective communication this year—socializing growth's wins and challenges, getting buy-in (both from leadership and cross-functionally), and inspiring everyone with the impacts we're delivering to customers. When growth wins, everyone wins.
"People are happy when they have the autonomy to do their best work."
+ Team members are given autonomy to do their best work. This is balanced by co-creating "game plans" that align everyone's efforts toward common metrics and activities.
This is something our CEO, Chris, and I have been workshopping a lot over and over again every quarter. We look at our metrics, brainstorm what we're going to achieve with the rest of the team, map out what we're going to do, and then we think about how we can create a common language that we can use and inspire the team. After that, the rest of the team and I have full autonomy to execute to get there.
"People leave managers, not companies,"
+ For this, Alina and her team focus on creating systems that don't rely on reporting to potentially problematic managers. The emphasis is on creating an environment where team members work together effectively rather than operating in silos or under strict hierarchies. Additionally, job roles are kept flexible, allowing team members to swap certain responsibilities. This prevents people from feeling confined by their job titles.
For one quarter, we had a growth team made up of engineers, designers, and customer success. I've also operated as the sole member of the growth team, with cross-functional responsibilities. We're constantly experimenting with different approaches based on our business goals and priorities; we're not committed to a single approach or method.
