We greatly commend Ivanhoe Mines for their remarkable contribution to both the economic and social fabric of the DRC. As sustainability is also at the core of our values at Kuchera, we are inspired by their efforts to uplift local communities and drive real impact through Kamoa Copper S.A. Find out more about the impact being made at the world's third-largest copper mine from this article by Gerard Peter from Mining Review Africa as he speaks to Jasmine Abrahams ( Vice-President of Sustainability ). Jasmine Abrahams -“You cannot take a paternalistic approach to decide what they need, it’s ultimately counterproductive. Many of these communities already have the land and assets and know what they require. Our approach to sustainability prioritises collaboration with communities, ensuring our efforts yield meaningful, lasting impact,” she concludes. https://lnkd.in/eRcPpy-A

New industry data analysed by the Queensland Resources Council (QRC) has shown the number of women working in trade positions in Queensland’s resources sector increased by almost 40 per cent during the 2022–23 financial year. Women now work in 13 per cent of Queensland’s trade roles, a record high for the sector. The data also shows that nine out of 10 women employed by resources companies now work in ‘non-traditional’ roles such as engineering, environmental science, data analysis, production supervision and management positions. Young Women in the Mining Industry in Papua New Guinea (PNG) Papua New Guinea (PNG) boasts a thriving mining sector, traditionally male-dominated. However, a shift is underway, with young women actively participating in exploration and production. Challenges persist: gender bias, lack of representation, safety concerns, and balancing family and career. Empowering young women involves education, advocacy, and inclusive policies. 3. Empowering Young Women 3.1. Education and Training Investing in education and vocational training is fundamental. PNG must provide opportunities for young women to acquire relevant skills, whether in geology, engineering, or environmental management. Scholarships and mentorship programs can bridge the gap. 3.2. Advocacy and Awareness Promoting awareness about women's contributions to mining is crucial. Advocacy campaigns can challenge stereotypes and highlight success stories. Additionally, workshops on gender equality and workplace rights can empower young women. 3.3. Inclusive Policies Companies operating in PNG's mining sector should adopt inclusive policies. These policies should address gender equity, safety, and equal pay. Transparent reporting on gender diversity metrics can hold companies accountable. 4. Success Stories 4.1. Mary's Journey Mary, a young geologist, defied societal norms to pursue her passion for rocks and minerals. She now works for a major mining company, conducting geological surveys and contributing to resource estimation. Mary's journey inspires other young women to follow their dreams. 4.2. The Women in Mining Program The Mineral Resources Authority of PNG (MRA) runs the Women in Mining (WIM) program. WIM aims to empower women landowners in mining communities. It focuses on capacity building, participation in decision-making, and financial literacy. Through WIM, women are negotiating better benefits and advocating for their rights. 5. Conclusion Young women in PNG's mining industry are breaking barriers and reshaping the narrative. By addressing challenges, promoting education, and fostering an inclusive environment, we can ensure that these trailblazers continue to thrive. Their contributions are not only essential for economic growth but also for creating a more equitable and sustainable mining sector. --- Note: The information in this essay is based on official sources and initiatives, including the Mineral Resources Authority of PNG (MRA) and World Bank reports.

Happy World Youth Skills Day! According to the United Nations, this observance day was designated in 2014 to celebrate the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship. This year’s theme "Youth Skills for Peace and Development," underscores the crucial role young people play in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. At IWiM, we recognise the immense potential of youth in shaping the future of the mining industry. As an industry, it's crucial to implement initiatives and policies that encourage the retention of young talent. Too many young professionals enter the mining field only to switch career paths due to the challenges they encounter. By investing in skills development and providing ample opportunities for young professionals, we can pave the way for a sustainable and innovative future for the industry. #WorldYouthSkillsDay #YouthInMining #YouthTalentRetention #MiningIndustry
