While engaging with our first 100 children in Ketu Slum through various activities like football, karate, and dance, we were struck by their enthusiasm and talent. Four exceptional children caught our attention, showcasing remarkable skills and potential. As we spoke with each of them, we discovered that they had been out of school, despite their evident desire to learn. We decided to support their education by enrolling them in school. To better understand their needs and provide comprehensive support, we chose to visit their families and familiarize ourselves with their home environments. This will enable us to provide a more tailored approach to helping them succeed. During our visit, we were struck by the stark reality of their living conditions. The families of these talented children are struggling to access basic necessities like food, clean water, and sanitation. We realized that their educational journey is intimately tied to their overall well-being, and that addressing these fundamental needs is crucial to their success. Sometimes you need to jump in the deep end to learn swimming. If you have donors or potential donors who have high giving capacity but have not made big gifts to your nonprofit, don’t be shy! Its Giving Tuesday. That means YOU are probably getting inundated with ASKS for your hard-earned money. Navigating all of those asks can be tiring and difficult. Some of them may not even be real nonprofits! I have heard in the past that something like 14,000+ nonprofits exist in Wisconsin that are specifically for Veterans. As a combat veteran who has done what I believe to be a decent amount of due diligence and homework, mainly to take care of myself, I still couldn't name more than 50 organizations that are intended to support me in this state. So how does someone REALLY navigate all of these donation requests? One of the most important things a nonprofit can do, is be transparent. There were a ton of bad actors IN SERVICE, and there are a ton of bad actors AFTER SERVICE. One of the biggest things I pushed for was to get our Platinum Transparency rating from someone like Guidestar or Charity Navigator ASAP. Part of that process requires a professional accounting service to do your books, AND for you to upload your tax documents to be vetted. So when you choose to give a monthly recurring donation to Next 18, you can rest assured that that donation.... no matter what amount.... is going to support the mission. And that mission is suicide mitigation and prevention for my fellow veterans and first responders across this country. I will wade into the muck that many will not. Because every time I look at a new group of participants, I see 12 of me looking back, begging for support and resources that I did not have when I was in my own deep dark hole.
