Just wrapped up an incredible IBC - International Broadcasting Convention 2024 with the Cineom Broadcast India Limited team!Had some fantastic conversations with clients, prospects, industry peers, and our amazing OEM partners. #GenAI was definitely a hot topic, but #monetization and #efficientworkflows were also front and center in everyone's minds. These 4 days flew by, and while we couldn’t dive into everything, here's a quick summary of my takeaways: The M&E industry is in a whirlwind of transformation right now. From GenAI and Virtual Production to SMPTE 2110 workflows, we’re seeing a lot of buzzwords flying around. But it's crucial that we build a strong #ecosystem, focus on #localisation, and forge solid #partnerships to make these technologies work for us locally. It’s not just about following trends from the West but crafting solutions that fit our unique regional needs—think hybrid models that blend Linear broadcast with IP, for example. As solution designers and system integrators in this dynamic and ever-evolving industry, it's essential for us to collaborate and leverage each other’s strengths to create a powerful joint value proposition. The one piece you’ve all been waiting for, my #IBC2024 preview! While NAB had its moments, on the whole it was a letdown. It was hoped to be a celebration of the full-on return to the post-Covid trade show cycle, however people still stayed away. A weak economy, ongoing ripples from the 2023 Hollywood labour strikes, and a retrenching amongst the streamers meant only 61,000 people attended the show in Las Vegas, down 6% on the previous year. All eyes will therefore be on the IBC attendance as companies look to justify the costs of exhibiting. You would hope that IBC would be able to hold its own with its core European audience. However the mood music leading up to the show has not been wholly positive. These are tough times. Encouragingly, the inbox has been awash with pre-IBC news (some of which is under embargo). It feels that companies are keen to get releases and key messages out to avoid them getting lost in the week of the event. Interestingly, there is a clear interest and desire to push the boundaries in cameras to empower content creators and producers alike to embrace unique and more immersive storytelling. However, how would wireless carriers also meet the competing demands of business-critical B2B 5G/IOT use case requirements from Global Media Companies such as ESPN, CNN, CBS Sports, Fox Sports and BBC for mission-critical UHDTV live video streaming from 5G-connected UHDTV video cameras and drone-based video streaming at the same time and at the same location. The story of our co-founders, Ben and Lionel Dreshaj, started over 20 years ago. Children of immigrants to the USA, the brothers saw a problem. Their parents and wider community had limited access to TV content from their homeland. Determined to reconnect them with their roots, they set out to build a solution.
