📺 WEBINAR - Characterizing the groundwater-surface water interface 📺   Join in this Wednesday when Paul McLachlan hands out early Christmas present in the shape of knowledge on how to characterize the groundwater surface water interface by means of #TEM. The groundwater-surface interface is crucial as it actively regulates the transfer of nutrients, contaminants, and water between #groundwater systems and #surfacewater environments. This presentation will focus on several examples utilizing land and water-based #TEM methods. These methods permit highly productive and detailed characterization of properties relevant to GW-SW exchanges. The first case study will cover land and water-based surveys in #Grindsted, Denmark to characterize groundwater pollution. The only option for reversing this trajectory towards disaster is to reduce the amount of freshwater that escapes to the oceans. For this, the most readily implementable approach is to use engineering to increase the amount of rainfall that recharges groundwater reservoirs so that less escapes to the oceans. This is now widely known as ‘managed aquifer recharge’ (MAR) or ‘artificial recharge” (AR). In this book, six cases are discussed, covering different physical and management environments and recharge methods in southern Africa. They are structured to bring out an understanding of the different driving forces towards the use of MAR techniques, factors that affect the selection of a particular MAR technique, and how efficient and effective various MAR techniques have proven to be. In this webinar from the SEG Europe Regional Advisory Committee and the NSTS Hydrogeophysics Subcommittee, Denys Grombacher of the Hydrogeophysics Group at Aarhus University will discuss several mobile and stationary TEM methods. He will highlight the complementary nature of these approaches; particularly with respect to resolution capabilities, scale, and cost. The Hydrogeophysics Group (HGG) at Aarhus University has had a strong focus on TEM methods, beginning with the airborne SkyTEM system and later with ground-based systems, both stationary and towed (tTEM). There will be a focus on the latest developments, particularly towed TEM systems enabling efficient high-resolution mapping of near-surface systems. He will also discuss examples including characterization of flow pathways surrounding a landfill site in Denmark, and groundwater prospecting efforts in Kenya and Ethiopia. The Nisku Formation has a variety of highly porous and permeable reservoirs with structural and/or stratigraphic traps within isolated reefs, barrier reefs and shelf dolomites. Anhydrites and/or shales act as storage complex seals.
