Each year the construction industry invests millions of dollars and thousands of training hours to address safety issues from fall protection to personal protective equipment. Adversely, the construction industry is one of the leading industries in two areas: death by accidental overdose and death by suicide. A statistic that none of us should be proud of. So I propose this question: Where is the investment in emotional fall protection? Imagine if we invested in helping members with mental health issues at the same level as safety classes during and post-apprenticeship. With emotional fall protection comes real change in the culture of construction. We need to move away from myths and rituals and embrace real cultural change when it comes to addressing mental health issues on the jobsite.

Skills valued in the construction industry Here are the main skills employers in the construction industry look for. 1. Positive attitude Being positive and respectful of others helps you enjoy your job more. It also shows your employer and co-workers that you’re a valuable and friendly team member. 2. Teamwork Construction projects require people to work well together as a team to deliver quality work safely and on time. Teamwork helps you build trust with your co-workers and employer. 3. Self-management Being responsible for yourself is a valuable skill in the construction industry. You’ll have a better chance of finishing your training and dealing with the job if you manage your time and tasks well. 4. Willingness to learn Being willing to learn shows your employer you’re interested in the work and increases your chances of learning your trade properly. New technologies, tools and construction methods mean you’ll need this skill to keep up with changes in the industry. 5. Critical thinking The ability to think things through to avoid mistakes and get good results is an important skill in the construction industry. For example, a carpenter checks the weather forecast and schedules indoor jobs if it might rain so that work can continue. 6. Safety-conscious Being aware of your surroundings and safety risks in the workplace can save lives on construction worksites. For example, knowing that exposed wiring is dangerous because of the risk of electric shock means you can report the hazard and get it fixed. 7. Hard-working Hard work and physical tasks are part of working in construction. Staying fit helps you cope with the demands of your apprenticeship and life on the job. 8. Communication Knowing how to write, speak and listen well helps you learn and do your job properly. You'll use these skills every day, for example, when ordering supplies, recording measurements or talking to co-workers.

Well said Mark Farmer. A holistic review is indeed absolutely, needed. My thinking is that there are several strands; Business Model, Culture, Technology, Image and Management. We are lacking in all departments, yet as many have said the #builtenvironment has so many tremendous #careers on offer; hidden in plain sight, which is what we at the CSTT are bringing to the attention of schools/young people. And BTW, like it or not, Construction is a tarnished brand; the IT Sector became the Tech Sector and sexy at the same time! We can make a similar change too as the Built Environment has wide appeal! Mark Reynolds, the trickle down from Tier 1’s hasn’t worked brilliantly so far, and I know not through want of trying. In a sector of our size and makeup the effort needs to be bottom up at the same time, as Building People has been arguing for years. Like others I have ideas about the solution, but we need the political will and long term support from a member of the government who cares, and hangs around long enough to get to grips with the issues. What we don’t need is another review and report Mark, yours is still a great starting point. What we also must have is a defined programme of change and more companies/people in the sector to invest some time and energy in these isses and the next generation. The future for this sector, which is the very fabric of a happy, healthy and wealthy society is too important to neglect.
We need to have a holistic and honest debate about the effectiveness of pathways into construction, especially into our core site based building trades. This is partly about the education and funding system but we also need a reality check on societal change including kids' workplace & career expectations and on how our industry functions including its dysfunctional training and flexible employment drivers. In my view, there's no point focusing on early age industry attraction initiatives if you can't resolve fit for purpose entry routes and also improve industry workload stability or counter cyclical support that better allows longer term investment in training and employment. We need to maximise the absorption of new post 16 trainees, enable their early productive employment and competency attainment and then their long term retention in the workforce. The problem however is easier to set out than the answer! #ConstructionSkills https://lnkd.in/gqAG7KSQ
