Caltrans has expanded its commitment to clean transportation in California with a $127 million deal with Stadler Rail, Inc. for six additional zero-emission, hydrogen-powered passenger trains, increasing the total to 10. This investment, supported by Governor Newsom's $10 billion zero-emission vehicle package, advances California as a leader in sustainable transit. With fuel cells provided by our founding member Ballard Power Systems, these trains are set to debut in 2027, and will operate on the future Valley Rail service, connecting communities with efficient, climate-resilient transportation. This marks a significant step towards decarbonizing the state's rail system. At the State of Good Repair Conference in San Francisco, transportation leaders from California and across North America gathered to discuss how rail and transit agencies are navigating the challenges of maintaining and upgrading aging infrastructure amidst shifting customer demands and evolving policy goals. Here’s what stood out: 🚆 Energy transition: Rail and transit operators, particularly in California, have been focused on decarbonization, such as RABA's innovations in battery electric and hydrogen buses for rural services, Sunline Transit's industry leading steps in hydrogen production and operations, and Caltrain's debut of their electrified fleet to reduce emissions and improve service quality. 📊 Innovations in asset management: New technologies enable smarter, data-driven asset management, boosting reliability and lowering long-term maintenance costs as agencies roll out new fleets and infrastructure. BART has long been a leader in asset and energy management, and discussed their next objectives for a safe, reliable, and sustainable system. 👷♀️ Workforce challenges: The aging workforce and the need for new technical skills are prompting agencies to innovate recruitment and training strategies. Attracting talent with expertise in emerging transit technologies is vital for operational efficiency. These insights reflect the ongoing shift in how rail and transit systems are planned, maintained, and modernized, ensuring they can meet the demands of diverse communities with ever more diverse travel needs while advancing goals for environmental and operational sustainability.

Last month, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced a US$127 million agreement to purchase six additional hydrogen-powered passenger trains from Stadler Rail, Inc., which brings them up to a total of 10 for the state. “These clean-energy trains are the future. Change Energy has produced several technoeconomic assessments of hydrogen-fueled railway service, including a conceptual "What If?" simulation of transitioning all of Canada’s railway propulsion power to hydrogen to achieve sector-wide decarbonization.
