It’s easy to forget the importance of the ETCS fitment of Britain’s freight fleet. Our nations’ freight fleet travel all over the country, which means a critical number of locomotives need to be ETCS enabled before lines like the East Coast Mainline can fully operate using digital signalling. That’s why the dynamic testing of the Class 66 at Network Rail’s Rail Innovation and Development Centre (RIDC) in Leicestershire is such a significant milestone. It will prove that the system behaves as it should do whilst moving around the test track. The Class 66 is the most common type of freight loco on Britain’s rail network and it is the first locomotive in the main freight fleet that has been fitted for digital signalling that has gone to RIDC. Reaching this milestone is the result of a huge amount of smart engineering which included retrofitting and testing of the ‘First in Class’ (FiC) 66039 DB Cargo locomotive with our Siemens Mobility Trainguard 200 European Train Control Systems (ETCS) digital signalling. This has been enabled by industry collaboration between Siemens Mobility, its fitment partners, Network Rail and DB Cargo (UK) Limited and reflected in East Coast Digital Programme's partnership model to achieve this FiC fitment of ETCS. In the coming years, hundreds of freight locomotives will undergo retrofitting of this ‘next generation digital signalling’, paving the way for the removal of signals on the East Coast Mainline. Now that this milestone has been reached, the UK is a step closer to enhancing rail freight operations, enabling longer, faster, and heavier freight trains to run, reducing road transport emissions. It’s a great achievement for all involved in this transformational project. #RailwayTransformation #TransformTheEveryday #railfreight

Video of Siemens Mobility metro train tested for London Underground Transport for London, the local government body responsible for transport in the UK capital, ordered 94 Inspiro trains from the German manufacturer in 2018 (see https://lnkd.in/ddTYVxGj for details). The first vehicle is now being tested in Germany and will be sent to the UK later this year for further tests and entry into service in 2025. Under the terms of the contract, some of the trains will be manufactured in Goole, UK, Siemens’ first manufacturing operation in the country. The company says it is investing £200 Mln (€235 Mln) in the new site, creating 700 jobs in the production site and 1,700 in the supply chain. Siemens Mobility also reported yesterday that it would open the plant this spring. The production plan for the Goole plant has been adjusted to include assembly of up to 80% of the trains for the new Piccadilly line, up from 50% previously. The rolling stock for the line is now manufactured at Siemens’ site in Vienna, Austria. 𝐀𝐥𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: UK's First Major Commuter Fleet Equipped with ETCS! 🚆 The team at Alstom has successfully retrofitted the Great Northern Class 387/1 train with the European Train Control System (ETCS), making it the first major commuter fleet in the UK to adopt this cutting-edge technology. ETCS offers significant benefits, including increased safety, efficiency, and sustainability. It enables more precise train control, reduces the risk of human error, and allows for higher train densities on the network. This achievement is a testament to the collaboration between Alstom, Network Rail, GTR (Govia Thameslink Railway), and Porterbrook. It paves the way for the wider adoption of ETCS across the UK's rail network, promising a brighter future for rail travel. 📖 Read the full article from Railway News here: https://lnkd.in/eftB5avP #Alstom #ETCS #RailIndustry #Technology #Innovation #UK #RailTravel #DeployRecruit

Short-term decisions 🕒 have further destabilised the UK rail industry 🚄, with a lack of orders for new trains jeopardising jobs at Hitachi and Alstom rolling stock plants 🏭 that were set to build HS2 trains. Such choices undermine our rail infrastructure's future 🛤, signalling a pressing need for long-term vision 🌍 over immediate cost-cutting. #UKRail #Transport #HS2 #Railway #SustainableTravel 🌱
Lack of orders puts future of HS2 train factories in doubt
