This week marks the start of International Development Week. This is an annual moment for Canada’s international cooperation sector to come together and review progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. At IJM, we work to protect people in poverty from violence and slavery and empowering survivors to lead change in their communities is at the heart of it. It involves dialogue and championing the voices of survivors in court, government meetings, justice system strengthening and local media. We believe that when Canada’s international development programs are built in partnership with and informed by the lived experience of vulnerable communities, they will result in sustainable and dignified solutions that protect people from violence. The opening plenary of the #4thTechnicalSymposium of the UN Inter-Agency Task Force on Social and Solidarity Economy (UNTFSSE) has brought key messages from representatives of the countries that took the lead towards the adoption of the United Nations #Resolution on “Promoting the #socialSolidarityEconomy for #sustainableDevelopment”. This included senior representatives from Senegal, Spain and Chile, who emphasized the political importance of #SSE within their own government priorities to address multiple social, economic and ecological challenges in their countries. They stressed the importance of the #UNTFSSE in making this resolution possible and the key role it will play in rolling out strategies to promote implementation of the resolution around the world, which will be the focus of this two-day discussion.   Representatives of the Province of Quebec and the City of Montreal who are hosting this meeting also stressed the importance of SSE in promoting just and equitable socio-economic development in their territories as part of a “plural economy”, highlighting notably action programmes following adoption of Quebec Law on the Social Economy. Emphasis was also placed on the key role of local authorities and civil society as vital forces to drive the development of SSE and supportive policies at different territorial levels. The meeting is also attended by senior representatives of the French government that played an essential supportive role in the adoption of the resolution.

Today, on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we reflect on the journey towards healing and understanding. This day serves as a solemn reminder of the need for reconciliation, empathy, and unity. Addressing systemic inequities is key to the work of the Definity Foundation. Sharing a quote here from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada's 94 Calls to Action that reminds us to recognize that reconciliation is continuous, broad, and needs to be intentional: "Together, Canadians must do more than just talk about reconciliation: we must learn how to practice reconciliation in our everyday lives - within ourselves and our families, and in our communities, governments, places of worship, schools and workplaces. But we have traditions here that date back over 60,000 years! 26 Jan is a National Day of Mourning for the First Nations people of this land. A day that marks the beginning of many adversities like genocide, and dispossession. A nation with such rich cultural history needs to recognise and respect its First Nations people, and at the very least, #ChangeTheDate.

It’s important to hear/read the multifaceted implications of various immigration statuses in the context of overall population density, growth rates, humanitarian efforts, international agreements/collaboration and the imperative of sustaining positive public perception & discourse regarding immigration. Meeting the settlement needs of PRs & NPRs, while balancing the capacities of municipal and provincial social services, healthcare, and housing - along with labour market dependencies are some of the challenging issues behind the questions - Can we afford to let so many people in? Can we afford not to?
