One of the most important European regulations has been adopted today after a 𝐯𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐈𝐃𝐀𝐒 𝟐.𝟎 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐥. The amendments to the framework will unify standards for European digital identity services, in particular the EU Digital ID wallet which will condense common digital credentials into one mobile application. 🇦🇺 🆔 Australia’s long-awaited digital ID laws have successfully passed Parliament and are now awaiting royal assent before coming into effect in November 2024. The Digital ID Bill 2024 and Digital ID (Transitional and Consequential Provisions) Bill 2024 mark a significant milestone, as highlighted by the Department of Finance. Once enacted, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will oversee digital ID regulation, while the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner will handle privacy aspects. In a major boost to the Digital ID system, the federal government is allocating AU$288.1 million in the federal budget over the next four years. This is a significant increase from last year’s AU$24.7 million. Key investments include: - **Australian Taxation Office (ATO)**: AU$155.6 million over two years for myGovID and the relationship authorisation management service. - **ATO, Department of Finance, and Services Australia**: AU$23.4 million over two years for piloting government digital wallets and verifiable credentials. - **Services Australia**: AU$46 million over two years for the identity exchange. - **Department of Finance**: AU$35.2 million over two years to support the program’s operation.
