A diamond in the rough is the right way to describe Burgundy Diamond Mines. Since the start of the year, Burgundy's share price on the Australian stock market has risen by 13%, which is hardly a sparkling performance, except when measured against widespread falls of around 30% by rival diamond miners. Petra Diamonds and Gem Diamonds Limited, two London-listed miners, are down 37% and 30% respectively, while Canadian-listed Lucara Diamond is down 12% and Australian-listed Lucapa Diamond Company Ltd is down 38%. This is a living picture of 80–90% of coloured stone extraction process globally. Mostly informal and carried out mainly in remote locations by locals, foreigners, and neighbouring "guests" amongst others. It also paints a vivid depiction of the hard work and dedication that goes into extracting and sourcing these valuable resources. Despite the challenges faced by artisanal miners, the coloured stone industry remains a vital part of the global economy, bringing beauty and value to consumers around the world, including the vibrant hues of the gems now coming out of these pits! As technology advances and consumer demand grows, the coloured stone mining industry must adapt and innovate to meet the needs of a changing world while maintaining a commitment to responsible practices and sustainable development. The thing about quality consulting work is that it keeps on giving. In this case, large diamonds. When we did the FS for Grib in 2011 we sampled the kimberlite, processed 50 kt of it, got 3000 carats and valued these. In addition we sent core samples to Canada that were analysed for micro diamonds. The statistical stone count of micro diamonds corelates with the macro diamonds and the comparison of all this produced the wonderful JORC MRE. Here we are 12 years later and those estimates hold up. Other interesting things about Grib is that it is situated in a swamp and 75 x 250m deep dewatering wells keep the walls stable. The host rocks are typically between 20 and 60 Mpa UCS. For the mine to be built a river was diverted and an adjacent lake was drained.

Since the initial discovery of diamonds in 1908 near Lüderitz, this regional composite placer deposit has yielded over 100 million carats of +95% gem quality stones. The SEG 2024 Field Trip offers a rare opportunity to travel through the relatively pristine coastal desert environment of the Sperrgebiet, focusing on the unique Namibian diamond mega-placer deposit. A combination of factors including climate and weather systems, crustal structure, timing, provenance, and drainage history combined to produce the mega-placer. In some areas today, unique and innovative mining methods are used to recover the diamonds. All of this will also be included. This pre-conference trip will be held September 19-25, 2024 and provide an opportunity to see deposits and mines generally not accessible without special permits. #SEG2024 #SEGFieldTrip #diamondexploration #diamondsmine #MineralExlporation #diamondmining https://lnkd.in/dH6D-QaG

Mining Short Notes📝 WHAT IS THE DEFINATION OF A QUARRY? A quarry is a place where rocks, sand, or minerals are extracted from the surface of Earth. A quarry is a type of mine called an open-pit mine, because it is open to Earth's surface. The most common purpose of quarries is to extract stone for building materials. Quarries have been used for thousands of years. Quarrying material for use in building materials was much more work. Stones had to be carried or dragged out of quarries manually. Stones could also be hauled with pulley systems involving ropes and moveable wooden tracks or sleds. This process often involved thousands of slaves and other workers.
